    ...for stopped emergency vehicles."

this seems like another well intentioned "law" that is going to end up with disasterous consequences. I'm starting to notice that whenever you're in hiway traffic, and you come up on flashing blue lights on the shoulder, the people in front of you start stomping their brakes and swerving wildly all over the road to avoid being in that right lane.

I was taught in driver's ed. (way back in high school,) to NEVER slow down or brake on a hiway. it certainly makes sense to pay attention and NOT hit someone on the shoulder (even though they shouldn't stop on the shoulder anyway,) but aren't you always supposed to be paying attention to staying in your lane? seems like this "knee jerk" reaction that drivers have around emergency vehicles on the side of the road is going to end up causing MORE accidents than before we had the requirment to "slow down or move over." maybe we just don't have enough laws yet.

I agree to some point! What the law really states is that you should move over or come to a slow down! Now I have seen many over react to the situation and those people should not be on the road:biggrin_25513:
In Indiana we had many cops killed/injured due to vehicles flying by the cop in the fast lane etc.

What I really think is when we build "new" road they should take in account a little more for cops/stranded vehicles. The cop lights really slows down the traffic and causes most jams:biggrin_25524:

I'm sure if it were you on the side of the road you might have a different view than the one you have now, the one of you better stay out of my way because I didn't tell you to stop there. If you are paying attention nothing about this law should surprise you, look to you're left if you can't get over then slow down, pretty simple I think

I like to pick on you Logs :biggrin_255:

    My opinion....
    1. All cops have a PA and can easily direct the person to pull over to the side further, allowing the cop car to be out away from the shoulder father then the car being pulled over.. This would allow the cop car to be used as a shield and provide some protection...

    2. If there is not enough room then they need not to pull the person over on the side of the Interstate, but rather tell them to continue on to the next exit and pull them over there...

I have seen some cops being really really DUMB, far as pulling people over on the Interstate and really putting themselves into uneccary risk..
A little more thinking on there part would prevent less cops being hit....

I am sure most of you have seen the video. There was a small wreck on the shoulder and and a cop cam video showed a car with a fedx truck behind it.. The fedx had doubles and lost it crashing into the cop car..
I guarantee that was do to the person in the car slamming on the brakes in front of the fedx...

I agree you should NOT slow down but rather mover over if you can, and if not continue in a safe manner and that would not be slowing down bunching traffic up behind....

"you better stay out of my way because I didn't tell you to stop there."

I NEVER said, or implied that. you're putting words in my mouth.

"If you are paying attention nothing about this law should surprise you,"

if people are ALREADY paying attention, then why do we need the law?

"look to you're left if you can't get over then slow down, pretty simple I think"

it obviously isn't simple for the people who go apesh*t when they see the blue lights and start jerking their steering wheel all over the place and stomping their brakes to where their rear ends come up off the road.

so if you are paying attention, you should already be slowing down and should not have to do anything eratic. Personaly I don't think there are enough people out there that read any signs to have to wory about them getting in the way to give a cop some more room, hell when I move to the left for anything I am getting passed on the right by cars and trucks. Oh and that fed ex truck was sliding on ICE, when he went past that camara he was going WAY to fast, thats the same reason all those trucks on 80 in PA last week ended up closing the road down for as long as it was. Everybody just needs to slow down and drive with some common sense

It's GA law to move over for emergency vehicles. Or at least attempt to move over. I've seen State Patrol chase down people and ticket them for not moving over.

I have to agree with the original post. You now see people swerving to the left. There was an accident here in Nashville which was really the one that got TN to adopt this law. The cop had stopped on the left shoulder to help someone with a flat tire. That car was up close to the cement median. But the cop intentionally stopped with the the rear end of her vehicle out in the left lane.......kinda at a 45 degree angle. Along comes an 18 wheeler and hits the part of the car that was protruding and the resulting crash killed the female cop and seriously injured the motorist.
Turns out the truck driver had all kinds of violations........log books, suspended license, etc etc etc.
In later news briefings the cops contended that they intentionally were putting their vehicles in such a was as to protrude into the traffic lane. They claimed it was to protect the cops and stopped motorists.
STUPID! I have noticed that they dont do that anymore.

Yes, I did not mention the "ICE". Cause common sense would tell you after watching the video that the fedx truck was trying to slow down not to hit the car in front of him after it probably did the panic slam on the break maneuver.. Thus causing the pup to slide..... If you have drove a truck at all then you would know how people over react and do not pay attention at all to whats behind them... same thing goes when entering into a storm and soon as it starts to poor people freak out and slam on thier breaks...

I was there in PA last week on I80
I drove threw there 4 time during the mess and when they closed it down.
I went threw heavy snow you could not see more then a foot in front of you.

People was not for the most part going to fast as you say.... It was PA that should be at fault for not cleaning the roads.. Was a total mess and I did not see more then 3-4 DOT trucks per trip across ..
PA was simply letting the roads go and trying to save money period...
I personally saw a truck in front of me not going more then 10-15 MPH just slide down the hill and could not stop causing him to slide off the road

Get into Ohio and roads were just fine.. Get into NJ, NY they was just fine cause the road crews were out...

PA just trying to save money and claim they can't afford to take care of the road so they can turn I80 into a toll road... Politics at its best...

I think all states have adopted this law..

For you who all agree with slowing down pls tell me where would it matter if the cop gets hit at 65Mph or 50Mph?

I bet (can't prove) that there has been more accidents after this law has been in place.. And percentage wise the exact same amount of cops have been hit.. Again the cops should use much more precaution and take steps to protect themselves.. I would say less then 10% of cops use the steps i mentioned in my last post above to protect themselves.. 90% or more just pull over any old way and have thier butt sticking right out in traffic when bent over talking to the victim..
