There are some applications when a ratchet is very handy, if not required. But they can slow down the securement/de-securement process in most applications and can get difficult to operate efficiently if not well maintained or become too worn or beat up. If I have to choose between having one or the other, I'll always choose snap binders, but would prefer to also carry 2 or 3 ratchets for special needs.
I suppose you could make the argument that snap binders can be dangerous and difficult to break over and you may be required to get into a very "un-ergonomic" attitude or unsafe situation to break one over. But I guess I'm sort of old school in regard to binders and prefer the speed of snap binders for 90% of chaining applications. But if you're hauling of lot of equipment on aired tires, ratchets may be your best choice. -
Texan said it better than I couldve, I feel the same way.

the reason i dont use them is i broke three ribs using snap binders one time securing a load down talk about three weeks of hell riding in a truck with three broken ribs

I use both depending on the application. I like the speed that I get using snap binders.

30 seconds is not that important to me
SHC Thanks this. -
We had a guy break his shin bone a while back, that had to hurt. The snaps we carry have done pretty good for me personally, but I've wished for ratchets on occasions. If I was a O/O, I'd carry a combo of both.

I use snap binders but I have a couple ratchet binders. They come in handy sometimes.
I know of a guy missing an eye because of a snap binder. You have to be careful around them. -
Some AK steel mills won't allow you to use snap binders without written instructions from your company (even an O/O). They've had several injuries with them, one guy fell off his trailer and broke his neck. I personally don't like them, they're either too tight or too loose.

I use both. Either type excels in different situations.
