Few years back, I was climbing Eisenhower, Western had a set on, asked the driver how she liked them, my comment above was her reply

I'm trying to figure out where you run that you need that many chains. Colorado requires at most, all 4 outboard drives to be chained, unless you're in the oil patch off-road I know of no state that requires a chain on a steer tire, and drag chains are optional. I've run a few oil patch locations delivering "bird balls" and even then got by with one steer, 4 drive singles and no trailer.

There were two lying the middle of 70 Tuesday afternoon, one partially covered by snow, the other plowed against the guardrail.

I've heard of guys chaining their steers, but I haven't ever done so, and doubt that I ever will. I don't need that many chains for most municipalities, but I do know that some states do/can require chains for followers. Actually, I found a couple sets somewhere and threw them inside my spare tire. They were rusting pretty bad so I hung them on the rack with the others. Strange thinking, since I don't see myself in a situation where I'd need to chain 8 drives and 4 followers. I still weight 33,400 with 1/2 fuel and empty 53' box, accept loads of 46,600 legal weight. Maybe I'll lose a few next springtime. Save myself .000001 mph.

Throw them in a cement mixer with a few shovels of sand. Look brand new in 10 minutes.

    Or

Hook onto trailer hitch and drive around dirt road

WA will require 7 chains on a five axel rig and 9 on anything over five axels. 4 or 6 drives, 1 drag, 2 spare.

OR will require as many as 8 on a doubles set: 4 drives, 2 semi, 1 dolly, 1 wagon.

CA will is the ones that you may need 12 for a doubles set. 4 to 8 drives, 2 semi, 2 wagon.

As far as tightening the inside tire cams. That can be done you are just going to get wet doing it. Just part of the job.

    Starboyjim Thanks this.
