I have seven years of truck driving experience. All of my trucking experience is with Covenant Transport and US Xpress. Covenant and US Xpress are not LTL trucking companies. I'm considering quitting my current trucking job to get a job as a solo OTR driver for an LTL trucking company. I definitely don't want to do pickup & delivery driving.

The main reason that I want to switch to LTL trucking is that I believe that I would get a lot more hometime driving for an LTL trucking company. My trucking company only lets me have 1 day of hometime for every 6 days that I work. I want to work somewhere where I could get at least 48 consecutive hours of hometime per week.

Do solo OTR LTL freight drivers typically get a lot more hometime than solo OTR non-LTL drivers?

Do I have a reasonable chance of finding a position as an OTR LTL driver in which I could get at least 48 consecutive hours of hometime every week?

Do solo OTR LTL freight drivers typically make more or less money than solo OTR non-LTL freight drivers?

What are the disadvantages of being a solo OTR LTL freight driver instead of a solo OTR non-LTL freight driver?

So you really wanna look into ltl linehaul driver, preferably union. You will work at a specified reduced rate for a set period. You will work 6 days a week, you will work dock and on call. Once your in you will have seniority to bid runs or open board at 100% rate. You will sleep in motels, not trucks. You will not get dirty. It will suck for 2 years. Then probably be ahead of lots of us. Just how you look at it.

    Suggestion:

Try for the soda companies, as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, 7-Up, etc., as a line haul driver. These companies work all year round, and you are home every night, or day, depending on which shift you are on.

Good luck to you and your entire family!

    One other suggestion:

Try to get onto the city transit bus line as a city transit bus driver. You are home every night.

You’ll need doubles and hazmat to be hired on to the ltl companies. Home time will depend on what company and terminal you work for.
When I did linehaul, I did a 3/2 lay down. Three trips one week, two the next. Drop the trailers and go to the motel.

I’m fairly certainly Coke and Pepsi don’t pay as well as LTL for linehaul positions. As a teamster at Coke we were paid by the trip and it isn’t even close to what I make at a LTL company for the same job.

It’s hard to find union truck driving jobs these days. I’ve heard Estes pay is good and non union.

Estes pay is good but I’m 99.9% sure you’ll start as an extraboard driver out 5 days unless you get really lucky. I met one guy that was hired directly onto a bid while I was at Estes. Good company to work for IMO.

Right almost same process as a union shop. A guy I know does line haul at Estes and makes like $90k a year.
