I am currently trying to decide between going with 40k rears(super 40s) keeping low air leaf suspension with a small pusher, 13.2 front air bag ride or air trac suspension 46k rears 14.6 front and a small tire pusher . I have spoken with to different sales representatives and have gotten to different answers. 1 recommends the 1st set up S.R. #2 suggested the 2nd option

The truck will be double framed I will be able to gross up to 120k now pulling a 3axle step now and will be getting into some 4 axle rgn work in the future grossing 140-146k max

With that being said I’m trying to set myself up to be able to use both trailers without giving or taking so much from one or the other if possible

The truck will have a 310wb sales rep 1 says that even with rgn work there is no way I’ll be able to get that much weight on my steers and that the 14.6 fronts will be unesserary even with the rgn. Also that air trac rides like #### and that I will be a lot happier with the low air leaf suspension.also that there is a good bit of weight added by going 46k rears and full lockers ... and that I can make it work with the 40s and 13.2 fronts

Sales rep 2: advice given was that it would be cheaper to get the the heavy duty setup from factory vs having to swap later if needed. And simply that i would hate to miss out on loads from not being able to handle the weight

I have not done any rgn work yet so I really don’t know what I can get by with. Also the rgn setup I am looking at i won’t be adding to my operation right away it will be a couple years atleast

Looking for real world experience and advice

Sounds like given the weight, option #2 is the most sensible.

Ride will just have to be the comprise. Oh well, it's better to be overbuilt pulling heavy, it's safer and more durable.

If you were pulling lighter then maybe option #1 you could get away with.

    Why 310 WB?

Go to an 18k front end, even if your tires are rated lower, the extra capacity that they can handle will wear better in the long run.

No air on the drives, I found out the hard way with one of the HH trucks, it was a disaster for the driver.

388 or short hood 389, 312"wb, frame insert from rear of frame to back of cab, 14.6 front, 13.2 lift, ds40-170 rears on low air leaf, 54" drive spacing, 90" from front driver to lift, 60" slider on my 5th wheel with its rear centerline set at the center of the tandems. Gross 105,500 on a daily basis in the northwest. 13-14.6 with the lift down while loaded. With our trailers I often see 17,000 on the steers before dropping the lift so you're salesman stating you cant get the weight up front is full of BS and you should not give him a second chance on spec'ing your truck. I would call around to other dealers and ask if they spec many HH rigs or just call up one in the states that higher weights and 4 axle tractors are a common thing.

310 is the estimated length needed to fit everything I want along the frame ... what happened with the hh truck that had air?

I sold it, and got more than I would have, someone is running it out west.

I never had a truck that long in my fleet. I think the longest was 265 but I have to look later.

Which “super 40’s” are you talking about?
DT 40-170 are only 50 pounds lighter than DT 46-170 for the whole set as the only difference is the housing thickness.
If you’re thinking DSH 40’s you will save around 500 pounds of weight. I don’t like the DSH 40 simply because they are an oddball to find parts for.
I wanted a 600hp 2050 torque engine when I speced mine but didn’t want the oddball DSH 40 or the extra 500 pounds so I went 550hp 1850 torque so that I could get DSP 40 rears.

Peterbilt will make you get a 46k suspension if you go DT 46-170.
If you go DT 40-170, you can get any suspension they offer.
Again the housing thickness is the only difference (1/16”). Diffs are the same for both.
