:biggrin_25510:Effective July 01, 2009 it becomes mandatory that any trucks travelling in Ontario will be required to have their ECM'S programmed to a maximum speed of 105 KM (or 65 MPH), however, the Ministry of Transportation says it is legal if your vehicles ECM is equipped with a program that is able to reprogram itself when you have left Ontario. It is illegal to have any kind of device that will try to fool the system.
Has anyone heard of or have a simple program or an on/off switch (for a C-15 CAT) that can be used to comply with the new law?

Not yet. Be patient. I have heard of GPS related speed limiting, but that is still years away. Pretty much still stuck with having to pull over and reprogram the ECM either at a shop or have your own computer and hardware hookups. There are no "Self Programming" ECMs that I have heard of yet. I would think the major manufactures could impliment an update in the ECMs to give you two maximum road speed parametres and the ECM would go by one or the other based on a simple switch input to a currently unused pin. I would think that would require alot of program writing. Some ECM versions may no be able to do anyway. There is a tremendous amount of intrest in this topic right now. I would suggest emailing direct to Cummins or Cat, or whoever and express your intress. If enough of people are asking for it they will implement it. Probably for a cost!

The last I heard was that the Bully Dog Big Rig Downloader will adjust the speed limiter on the CAT motors. I haven't really looked at the other downloader for the Cummins, Mack, or Detroit so I don't know if they do or don't have this option. IF you are just looking for the speed adjustment I would buy the Bully Dog.

Some european engines can have 2 speedlimiters set to ECM, switched by grounding 1 pin in some connector. That is used to get lower than 90 km/h speed, 90 is maximum allowed.

If I want to drive faster I can ground 1 wire going from tacho to ECM, that wire sends speedsignal to ECM so it doesn't know how fast truck is going. Only negative effect is you don't have cruise or engine brake when doing that. Should work with US trucks also, expect if you have "max rpm without speedsignal" mode activated.

The MTO has to be able to read the ECM. If not they will consider it not working properly which is required by the new law and you will subject to a fine. They also look for any tampering. Anything hooked into com-port of the truck is consider part the electronic system. If you have still have your laptop hooked up and they any kind of speed changing program running on the computer they will consider that a tampering device and it is subject to seizure! For now they seem to have all their bases covered.

You can have a computer, or a handheld device (Palm Pilot), in your possession, inside the truck. I have one, and MTO has seen it. in their words, as soon as you cross the border to USA, you can unlock your truck. When you cross back, lock it. Changing speed limit is not tampering.

However, if your VIN sticker shows 3.73 ratio, and your ECM shows 4.10 that is. If you have 22.5 tires, and your ECM shows 24.5, that is. If you mess with the switches on the back of the speedo head, that is also tampering.

I know this, because they did a Level 1 in Windsor supercoop, and they wanted to hit me with falsifying a log book...I had a 66.8 Mph average in AZ and NM. They said that since truck is locked at 65, log book is incorrect, and they will put me out of service for 72 hours. I am still a licensed Truck and Coach mechanic, and i own a Palm Pilot and interface cable, and CAT ET software. Once they seen the Palm and cable, they said, OK, free to go.
