Can someone please explain split mileage pay to me? I feel like it's probably a really easy concept that I'm over thinking. For example if I am a team driver and we are paid $0.42 per mile split does that mean all together we are making that amount for our combined miles driven? Or we are making $0.21 per mile?

Read your contract, but it usually means .21 of all paid miles, regardless of who is drivingLepton1 Thanks this.

Total the miles for the week driven by both of you.
Multiply by the team wage.
Divide by 2Lepton1 and AtticusRoad Thank this. -
"does that mean all together we are making that amount for our combined miles driven?"
That is exactly what it means.
Which means if one of you drives fewer miles, that driver is making more per mile than the other one.
It is a great system, if you are the driver driving fewer miles. -
Or you're married to your codriver.

More and more companies are going team which would be fine if all that money is going to the same bank account. All you do is divide pay per mile by two and that's what you and the other person will be making.

42 cpm is low for a team. 55 would be more like it. Team drivers are able to get a load a longer distance faster. Just in time inventory means that usually those loads are of higher importance. A company is paid better for those loads. So they can afford to pay a driver a higher wage.
When you team drive you do not get a deep sleep stage. Sleeping in a truck that is running down the road is not an easy thing to do. You are trapped feeling all the bumps and turns that your co driver makes. You get tossed around and awakened many times. Stopping for a 30 minute break every eight hours to go to the restroom doesn't cut it. So you have to use a bottle or trash can. Showers work out okay as you time that to work when you change drivers. But you are trapped in the truck and cannot go to a movie or whatever. The driver might just have horrible taste in music so you spend lots of hours lying awake planning on killing your co driver.
All of this means you need to make sure you are being well paid. 55 cpm is the least amount you should work for.
