Go to the CDL school that is an hour away until you pass your CDL. Put up with the daily drive, or get a hotel, until you finish CDL school and pass your tests. You have to go to some CDL school, I doubt there is one closer. Which is more important a wasted 2 hours per day or a paying job?

Is there a truckstop near the school?
I have a suggestion. I'm not trying to be a smart arse:
Sleep in the car at the truckstop.
There's showers there, a driver might be able to spot you one.
Bring whatever non-perishables you can from the house. It might not be what you want to eat, but it will keep you from starving. Sharing a can of peas, cold, sucks.....but it beats the alternative.
While you're at school, pepper your driving instructors with every question you can think of.
Ask questions when you don't understand.
Bring your "A" game to skills practice and on the road driving.
When I went to a rather fly-by-night school in 1994, I was newly married and REALLY "shoe-stringing" it, financially.
I worked hard to pass.
I thought I had it bad until I met a classmate, 4 foot 11 inch "Crazy Julie".
She had never driven a stick, never driven anything bigger than a Toyota Camry.
Other students were telling her she'd never make it through training.
She looked at them and said, "I HAVE to make it. I'm a single mother, my two kids are staying with my mom, I have my car and a suitcase full of clothes. This is my LAST CHANCE. I HAVE to succeed."
She was the first one to get a job after graduation, according to the placement lady.
TL/DR: Many have been in your position. You have to fight through that crap, if you truly want your CDL.
If you're not willing, you don't truly want it.
I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you both dig deep, get in the truck, and finish the job.Bean Jr., tscottme, austinmike and 2 others Thank this. -
I'll add to the above....something that helped me along the way to where I am now:
"The race goes not to the swift....or to the strong....but rather to those who KEEP RUNNING"

Once you both get your CDL’s , Covenant will train you both in the same truck. At least they used to. They are a decent starter company. Best of Luck ~

How did you plan on getting a CDL? It's no longer legal to just ride around with a CDL driver to get the license. You need to complete Entry-Level Driver Training from an FMCSA training provider.
Maybe you qualify for WOIA grant from the state Unemployment Office? That pays for all or most expenses of CDL school or another trade. It might have been better to figure this out before getting the "ground school" & permit. People here might be able to help get you training & job.Bean Jr. and austinmike Thank this. -

Yeah WOIA or WIOA, I forget, is awesome. It works for almost any trade school, not just CDL. It also pays for almost everything related to getting that training and it never needs to be re-paid. Win!

Tell CR England you both have permits and ready to start school. Don't say anything else about anything else, only that you both have your cdl permits and ready to get started.
Free transportation to the school plus free meals & lodging.
You both train together and then you get an assigned truck to run together as teams.Bean Jr. Thanks this.
