I agree, I don't see it - it isn't like anyone with 16 days of training is suddenly an expert in truck driving.. or a safe or courteous driver, whether they paid $5k or $2k for their course.

Im in that area and decided not to go to roadmaster as they only said that they would help me get a job at one of those co.s after classes (no guarentee) so I did alot of research and your right there's only a few (big)co.s that hire out of fl. . So I applied to stevens, I start school in late aug. and as long as I pass everything I was told I will have a job when Im done with school.
    Good Luck 2 You.

RoadMaster must be a puppy mill chain. There's one up here in Knoxville. They have heavy advertisement on TV. $5000 a pop, they can afford it :).

Good luck driver! The whole objective with the school is to get your CDL. The real training starts when you get hired on.

I went to "sky way trucking school" in hesperia california. I payed 1500$. For me it was OK. To get the CDL there I think it is for no body a problem there. The school was OK.
After them I started at a bigger company and had to make all again. At the bigger company I payed 1000$ for their school. With out the CDL I would have to pay 3000$.
The company where I drive for now, I think to learn it is OK To drive, I think it is better to choose an other company.

Cut rate CDL training, Eastern European drivers from Chicago driving across Ne and Wy tailgating in the rain and snow 5 feet off your bumper, terrible driving habits, on and on and on. And you don't understand what I'm saying? All you need to do is look at the name on these trucks and see where they're from. My point is this, "you get what you pay for", that goes for training, driving, rate cutting and safety. If it is done cheaper something will be missing with the end result, and that end result is safety.

Is it really necessary to enroll in a Roadmasters school for $ 5,000.00 or are there third parties that can get you the skills test and basic training? I have a hard time swallowing that kind of cash with no guarantee I won't be an unemployed trucker..not to mention they push otr...I really want to find something local.

Andrew all i can tell you is what i have researched for the past month and what i have been told. Roadmaster has a 97% success rate of getting there students jobs but it will be with a mega carrier that most likely has a bad rep. Theres tons of other schools that are cheaper but i wouldnt know if there any better than the next. Most companies that hire newbies are gonna want you to be a recent grad from a certified cdl school. I chose roadmaster because im currently goin to college still to get my va benefits(money) so that way even when i get hired on to a job i will still get those benefits for the first few months of my trucking career which will really give me an advantage.(as far as money goes) In my situation roadmaster is the best option for me but if i had more time before i started a cdl school i would definately have looked into a college type program that offers cdl classes as its cheaper and the training is longer which leads you to believe the training is better.

I went to roadmaster in jacksonville, fl. July of 2001, man was it hot out there! Had a great experience. Fly by night schools usually just teach you how to pass the driving test. Big schools like roadmaster teach you map reading, log book, and safe driving skills. That's prob. why the big companies hire from them. But you learn how to drive and live on the road once you get hired on as a driver. Schools teach you the skills you will need to get a job. It's up to you to hone those skills. And that only happens with time. Be safe and good luck.

They are driving Eastern European Way. LOL Of course they are tailgating coz your slow ### truck is set to cruise at 55mph in a 70mph speed limit in the middle lane.
