Does anyone know what the starter bolts should actually be torqued at?

These are the bolts that take a 5/8 12 point socket.

5/8-11 thread. 159 ftlbs lubed - 212 ftlbs dry. Give or take. Aluminum fly housing I prefer a dab of antisieze or paste as they do lock up with age

Tighten em all down so the starter don't fall off. They're pretty big bolts. Tough to over tighten and break.

Everybody asks about torque. On all bolts in a vehicle. Even the car forums ask.

I gaurantee. Shops aren't using torque wrenches on every bolt they install. Unless it's the cylinder head.

This is true. But shops that do this work all the time they know about how tight their gun hammers they know about how tight to make this and make that.

I generally try to torque whatever I can so that I know that it's tight enough and the bolt is not overstretched.

Sometimes you can't torque it. I can't fit my torque wrench in to torque at least one or two of those starter bolts so I'll do the best that I can.

But it is a good idea to at least know about what they should be torqued to anyway.

    German Spec... T.I.T.

Take it until it breaks, then back it off 1/4 turn... Lol

The bolt won't break but, they are easy to over tighten and pull the threads right out of the aluminum housing they are threaded into. Be careful.

So. Apparently it pays to be a retired mechanic.

I never worry about torque unless torque is called for. Like shops.

No break. No stripping of threads.

We just tighten em down and not worry about it.
And tighten depends on size of bolts
