    Hello Everybody,

I am in the start-up phases of becoming an O/O.

My question focuses on the non-driving part of our business, the paperwork. Permits, compliance, clearinghouse, UCR, CA#, IFTA fillings, Local/state/federal licenses, etc. All the small things one might over look.

Is there a "go to" business that will take care of all these things for us, so we can do what we do best, drive.

I've looked carefully into OOIDA, Comdata, FOLEY, TBS and others, but all only seem to cover a few things, but not everything. I don't mind a few companies handling everything at first, and at a reasonable price. I've read the reviews both good and bad on a lot of companies and I'm aware of the scams or services I do not need.

So, who did you use when you first started, if any?
Are there any you highly recommend and/or currently use?

    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

From people I've watched from start up, most agree it behooves you to do it all yourself, so it is done correctly - and, most importantly, you learn the process.

There was a pinned thread here a while back that detailed the process - you might find it.

OOIDA cost $45 per year for a membership.

If you pay them an additional fee they will set up your Authority, if you pay them additional fee they will take care of compliance, and they will answer any other questions that you have about anything else involving being an owner operator.

Aside from that I would form an LLC.

Myself I formed an LLC then had ooida do my authority and from there they have a lot of Education materials that it's not difficult to set your files up and do compliance. They can also take care of your drug testing Consortium.

If I were you I would search what's required to get your Authority so do you have a whole picture of it.

If you are a member ooida will also answer any questions that you have about compliance or 2290 or permits or anything else.

They are 100% worth the price of membership.

And one thing a lot of people don't realize is if you do any work in New Jersey you must be registered as a business in New Jersey or you can find yourself in a lot of trouble.

And as long as you are a member of OOIDA, you’ll have process agents in all states too.

Loading or delivering in New Jersey.
You don't need this if you're driving thru the state.

I learned a lot doing all the paperwork myself. Easier now with the internet.
    Good luck.

To form my LLC, I used these guys.

The name on your insurance and MC number has to be exactly the same, or your insurance can't file. So if you decide to form an LLC, get it done first. Then tell your insurance company to put the policy under "Eazy company, LLC". Also get your authority under that name. That way, everything matches. When I first went to get my truck, I didn't know that. I just had my insurance do it under my name. Well, they couldn't file my insurance, so my authority couldn't go active. I had to have the insurance policy rewritten. I also didn't form the LLC right away, so I had to do an MCS-150 just to add "LLC" to the end of my name, and then wait for FMCSA to get around to updating it. So make sure the name matches across the board. The company I linked set up my LLC literally in two days. So two days later, I had all the paperwork and EIN.

As others have stated, get a membership with OOIDA. Even if you only use them for BOC-3. I emailed and asked what they needed to get that done. They said my DOT and MC number, and then just ask. I emailed them back. They had my BOC-3 done, and it was viewable on the FMCSA portal in like three minutes.

Drug consortium is simple. Just call a urinalysis outfit, and ask them what is needed. I gave all my info over the phone. By the time I got there to pee in a cup, they already had all the paperwork done. I was in and out in ten minutes. No different than a regular pee test, other than a few more pieces of paper to sign. After your test comes back clean in a couple days, they send you the results, and all of your consortium paperwork. Super easy.

UCR you can do online in ten minutes.

State may allow you to file for LLC online. In Texas you can file an LLC in a matter of 2-3 days online Using the Secretary of State website. Easy to do.
