As a former law enforcement officer I think I shed some light on the subject.
As the name implies a State Trooper generally has jurisdiction anywhere in the state. Sheriff’s deputies are limited to counties or if in Louisiana, parishes. Police officers are usually limited to the incorporated limits of a city, town, village etc…
In some cases such as large metropolitan areas where the incorporated city limits are the same as the county/parish lines you tend to have metropolitan police forces where the area of the jurisdiction is the same. But, in those cases the Sheriff and his deputies provide certain services and the Police Chief and his officers perform other duties. However, in such instances they tend to have interagency task forces so resources are shared and not duplicated to address specific issues commonly faced by both agencies.RockinChair, hotrod1653, Tug Toy and 5 others Thank this.
