Once you have the new gear all installed. Jack up the front end to take the weight of the tires. Turn the wheel all the way to each stop and give about 40lb pull on the wheel against the steering stop. Do this for both L and R. This sets the relief in the gear to unload the pressure once you hit the stop to prevent damage.

If you dont set the poppets, you can have binding or limited steering pressure before you reach the steering stops. Turning radius can be drastically reduced.

Make sure to check that the steering stops are in place and adjusted where you want them for full travel before setting them.

I have no idea what poppets are. I changed my box a few years back, put in a used one. Re used the pinch bolt. Would like to back off my stops now. Do I need to re set the poppets? By turning/applying 40lbs.as described, afterwards?

Yes if going open to turn sharper. Adjust the stops to desired clearance. I usually set the same number of turns both directions and check tire clearance. Once adjusted follow the 40 lbs pull against each stop.........done.

If going closer or tighter radius, pull up the manual and follow the procedure to reset the poppet valve inside the gear and repeat the setting process.

Oh well I guess I’ll just have to put the new rails, 48” bunk, airide front end and a complete paint job on hold for now

My first truck GMC coe.had a input shaft that would seep.
I would change about every 3 months.
Then a mechanic in a car shop told me about a oversized O-ring I could install to fix.
The circumference was the same but the thickness was 25% fatter. It worked . I sold truck a year later, without any seepage.
