Got a issue with another radio. this one is my pride and joy. so i got a stryker sr490. fully built and tuned.i cant begin to tell u what all has been done to the radio. once again, i bought it from another driver. (kind of addiction of mine. buying used radios)but the radio was tested at 160watts barefoot. when i first turn the radio on, i get good "loud and proud" reports. after the radio has been on for a hour or so, ppl start sayin im over modulating! it progressivly gets worse from there. at first i was thinking alignment was off. but i think it would sound "donald duckish" from the start. could the modulation pot be goin bad? what else is tied to it? any sugestions is appreciated. thx and happy trails

Stock Mic? or does it have one of those SRA 198 noise cancelling Mic's? (SRA 198 is a heavy funny looking mic...Stryker started sending some radios out from the factory with them last year)

If it's just a stock Stryker Mic, you may try using a Noise Cancelling Mic and see if that helps.

Only other thing I can think of, is maybe some of the guys that say you sound over modulated maybe closer to you than the guys earlier....

I have had the Stryker 440, and 447 before and never had a issue with them, other than being bad-a $$ loud!

First off, there is absolutely no possible way that 490 will do 160! Back your mic gain up to about 3 o-clock and get a Astatic 636 or Road King RK56. Get that radio checked out by a GOOD tech. Not a half ### shop. Get him to set the radio at about 95. That'll be perfect and won't have the overmodulated sound.

I have a 636 on it. thats about the only mic i use. as for wattage, it was tested on a byrd at 160. it maybe hard to belive. but proven fact. my buddy bought a stock 497 and sent it in for a full build. he got 140watts out of his. that was a true loud and clear radio! but thx for the advice. i will defanatly get it into a good radio guy and will update everyone on the progress.

Bird Meters don't lie. Get it tuned way down to about 95 like I said. 160 is 60 watts over what it's supposed to do. Therefore the radio is stretched like a rubber band to his limit right before it breaks.

Radios or amps should not be milked for every watt
you can get. It does nobody any good.

It does good lining the wallet of the techs/hacks who do these kinds of modifications.

Have to agree. Just because it's loud doesn't make it sound good. There is nothing worse in my book than a cb radio that is overmodulated/over reverbed to the point you can't even understand it. There are just a handful of cb shops I would deal with. My personal advice (and I know it wasn't asked for) is when you hear a great radio, ask the operator all about it including the setup but especially who did the work. Chucks at Holliday,TN and Skywalker in Cowpens,SC are my two absolute go-to guys.

I go to Chuck myself and him only! Outstanding tech and a great guy! I live about a hour away from his shop so I don't have any problems making it through there.
