How do you guys/gals keep track of your milage in different states so you can pay your IFTA? Also how do you keep track of your deadhead mileage? Is there any programs to help you do this or maybe a gps unit. Thanks
Stupid Question?

lots of ways to do--but the old tried and true
Write down your mileage--when you enter each state and do the math--LOL--same for deadhead -
Write down your odometer every time you cross a state line.
Write down your odometer when you load.
Write down your odometer when you unload.
If you weren't loaded, you were deadheading.
Spreadsheets are pretty simple. For IFTA, have a column for the state, a column for the odometer when you entered the state, a column for the odometer when you exited the state, and a column that subtracts your outbound reading from your inbound reading for your mileage in the state. At the end of the quarter, sort the columns by state, add a row at the bottom of each state, and sum up the mileage column to get your total miles for each state for the quarter.
You can similar spreadsheet for your fuel purchases, with columns for the state and gallons pumped. Add an extra columns for the odometer reading, and then you can have additional columns to calculate your miles driven on that tank, and your mpg for that tank if you want. Again, at the end of the quarter, just sort by state, add a row at the end of each state, and then tally up the gallons purchased in each state for the quarter.
A spreadsheet to keep track of loads is helpful too...where you picked up, an odometer reading, where you delivered, another odometer reading, use the two odometer readings to get your loaded miles. Keep a few other columns, too, to keep track of what you got paid....freight bill, fuel surcharge, a total revenue, and a $/mile. -
I thought some of the gps systems did that for you too. I guess the question did sound stupid but I had to think that there are Trucking software programs that would keep track of that for you like Pro Miles or something. right now I am a local driver and only have to have the beginnin milage and ending milage per day. Thanks

Low tech: pencil and paper
High tech and dollar: GPS
I use a mini cassette recorder, change the tape each year, the old tape goes with my tax stuff as a permanent record if I get audited. -
TND 710, best money ever spent (upgraded from TND 500 - for sale). I think most of the trucker GPS's have this.
I also believe some online programs will give you mileage by state if you enter in points. -
I have mileage/fuel log that includes highways traveled....Origin and destinations.....Mileage at the time of fueling......
Once a month that info gets put into Quickbooks and then into a spread sheet to turn into IFTA quarterly..... -
WHATTTTTTTT!!!!!
We are suppose to keep track of out state mileages? Why didn't anyone tell me? Last year on IFTA I reported 127,000 miles. On each state reporting I wrote "Guess" -
And they left you alone?....
Man I wish I could that with my fuel card.....
"Hey...how much fuel did you just pump?"
"I don't know.....I guess about a gallon.....I think that's all I need to go from Green River, UT to Seattle.....".....
