Did an oil change Sunday on a 3126 Cat. in a Freightliner M2 106
and found 1/4" piece of piston ring on the magnetic plug.
Brand new short block w/ 30,000 miles.
Wouldn't this eat the cyl. bore? And the side of the piston?
    What do I do?

    skellr Thanks this.

The broke pieces may have came with the short block,

If there is room you can pull injectors and look inside with a scope before you pull the head.

Short block was not a Reman. - w/undersize journals, undercut crank, etc.
It was a brand new crank, and a new block, right from Cat - for 7 grand.
Yes; true, good Idea w/ the scope.
They have scopes now that are super small dia. on Amazon, they go to your phone to view.
May end up buying one just for this.

I know; its them new automatic self-gapping rings.

I don't see how this piece of ring could possibly slide it's way out
without making a "compression loss highway" - right into the oil pan.
    No pressure there??
    No power loss??
I'm about to cut open the filter - and look for the loch ness monster or sasquatch in there.
Must be somthin in there, I notice my oil pressure went up.

    Streetroddreams and Klleetrucking Thank this.

so I just cut open the filter. Nothing.
Black goo, some metal filings stuck to a magnet,
but not even the size of a pencil eraser came from the whole filter.

Could someone have dropped that in there to bust up stuff?

I drove it again today about 150 miles.
No issues with power, smoke, noises.
    Nothing.
    OK; that's a good thing.
Never mind, and thanx all - again.

I broke a injector years ago, it was almost 2 years before the broke screws came out on the oil plug.

A broken piece in a oil passage way wouldn’t be a first for cat. Think lazy union workers.
