Posted last weekend when I was going through Swifts driver qualification training.
Anyways, got the job. I got back home and had to send a few more forms in. Got my driver code and head out on Tuesday. Trainer is picking me up close to my house.
Looking forward to getting back on the road. I left driving in 2010.
Talked to the trainer today he seemed cool.
Thank you everyone for your experiences and advice

You're back in the game 15 years later, driver. The game has changed so much since you left it. Welcome back! Don't mind the A-I augmented surveillance... just focus on safe driving. I hope you have a cache of podcast episodes in queue for the ride.

Got my Spotify all set up lol. Took the break to help raise the kids. Now the last is about out so time to go back.
Drove an auto the first time for Swifts road test. Felt good compared to the manual and Long hoods I used to drive.
All set up to go this time. I have money and nothing to worry about at home.
It's bittersweet though. I feel so excited to get out there but ik the family will miss me. Training is 4 to 5 weeks. Guess I kinda feel bad that im excited to leave them lol.
Maybe come home maybe not during that time. Told my wife dont expect me to come home just in case.
I got my cdl in February so we've been preparing for this since then.bryan21384, nextgentrucker, tscottme and 1 other person Thank this. -

Congratulations
I "hibernated" from OTR in a home-daily, same trip daily for a long time as GPS and cellphones took over the industry. Man, I was really "lost" when I returned to OTR for a while as I tried to get up to speed using GPS and smartphones years after everyone else in the industry. It was crazy how I first started using the GPS on routes I'd never seen in real life.
Just accept certain things other drivers do every day will be unfamiliar for a while. You'll get back up to speed, and exceed others, faster than you think.
Do I understand Swift is OK with a driver with years away from the truck? Or, was that a big obstacle to getting hired?Last edited: Sep 12, 2025 at 7:36 PM

Already told her my phone will be on but I probably wont look at it until I stop. I usually stop every 3hrs or so to stretch my legs and hit a restroom. We have the tracking apps on our phones. Told her she can see when im stopped.
Yep with the last kid about grown its like a new life again.nextgentrucker, Turdzthaword and tscottme Thank this. -
Wasn't too bad getting on.
I have worked the same job for 15 years after I quit driving. So employment was good. No tickets or accidents and dont do drugs.
The only hold up was that im diabetic but its been under control for years, I go to the Dr when I supposed to and get my a1c checked every 3 to 6 months.
So I had to get a form from my primary stating im under control, when and what my last a1c was and if he thinks im safe to drive.
That was the only hold up because I had to make a drs appointment to fill it out but that only added a couple days. I was hired officially a couple hrs after I sent that form in.
Whole process from the date I applied to hired was 1 week and go out with mentor on Tues.tscottme, Albertaflatbed and Turdzthaword Thank this. -
Congratulations! You'll be shocked at how much things have changed, still enjoyable job though. My biggest stress a lot of times is other drivers, no more camaraderie, lots of lazy drivers now.. i just gotta laugh.. good luck getting back..
nextgentrucker, tscottme and GameOver0908 Thank this.
