I just bought an SWR meter today and noticed my SWR on 40 is 2.5. I know that I need to adjust my antenna now. I have been trying to get a radio check while on the road and no one will reply. Could the high SWR make it so no one can hear me transmit?

It sure wont help at all .
Is it lower on channel 1?
If it is lower on 1 than 40 you need to shorten your antenna .

You probably won't get a radio check because of all the yahoo's out here these days, the CB is a dying tool unfortunately. I used to spend a lot of money on my radios but just run a stock Cobra 29 anymore because it's just not what it used to be out here.

You want it under 2.0 and the lower you can get it the better off you will be but. I don't know what antenna you have but you should be able to goggle the info on how to set the SWR for the antenna you are using. You want to try and get a balanced SWR from ch 1 to 40 and as I said. The lower you can get it the better off you will be. Just don't chase the perfect 1.1 match because no one on the receiving end is going to be able to tell if you SWR is 1.1 or 2.0. Get it down as low as you can and let it go.

    >goggle "coax calculator" to see the true effects of SWR as it relates to radiated power and also the effects of using good coax vs cheap coax.

Also. The only time SWR becomes a factor is if it is way over 3.5. At this point the power that goes out from your radio to your antenna starts to drop off and you notice a decrease in the range that you can hear and talk.

As far as your radio checks goes. People ride around mad at the world these days so don't take it personal that no one wants to help you out. It did not used to be this way but those days have long since passed into history!

Yes a high swr will hinder your range, also because most truckers run small antennas, that too hinders range. Also a 3.0:1 is where you don't want to be transmitting. And yes I agree the CB seems to be dying off, but when skip rolls in at least you can tune to channel 6 and listen to the big boys yell into the mic "No doubt about it, bump bump bump, I just got down, bye buh-buh bye bye bye...."

What type of antenna do you have? What brand of coax do you have and how is the antenna mounted to your vehicle?
