My take on this is slightly different. I had never taken an advance period from any company that I worked for, in fact didn't even know how the process actually worked!
Now however, I'm an owner operator and up until early last year I was always able to take my advance off a load and do my own fueling, expenses and budgeting for repairs and/or breakdowns. Wasn't uncommon to walk around with several thousand during the week.
New office manager decides to no longer allow advances on loads and forced to use a fuel card (which I have to pay for!) and play banker with all monies collected for a week at a time. His way around this was to say "take advances if you need them..." Now, I never need them, but since he wants to play banker, I hit him up at every opportunity since he wants to play with my money. Insignificant repair here, plus check. Permit here, plus check. Oil, additives, etc, plus check! Large expense here, plus check!!!
