I've been pulling spreads, and all fixed axle trailers till I went dry van. I remember seeing a tool that clamped to trailer side, and spring would pull release handle while you rocked trailer, now I need one but not finding it at any truck stops I visit... Chicago to Dayton OH.

Thx. If I understand what you mean, that is only for holding rod out while sliding?... I'm looking for something to help me release worn pins.

If the air is off and it is just pins that are stuck out, I use a 2lb engineering hammer, whack the pin once or twice and it usually pops on in.TheDude1969 Thanks this.

Yep misunderstood....thought you were wanting to hold rod out. Agree with Kmac 2lb engineering hammer, some wd-40, and sometimes just a good rocking will do.

I had one of those stubborn ones last night, had to rock it a few times but finally broke lose. I seem to get the old crappy trailers lately, the vise grips work great for those rods that wont stay out though, i have a pair just for that.

I have one, it worked for when I needed it, but won't work on the trailers we pull now. Not sure where it is.
It would get the most stubborn ones released with the straight pull handle.
2 lb hammer isn't big enough, I use a 3 lb. but 4 or 5 would be about right.TheDude1969 Thanks this. -
Most of our trailers have the air release pins but we keep a pool of older trailers for our Hubble Power systems account that still have manual sliders. The one I'm pulling now was a PITA to unlock the pins.

Use a hammer on stuck pins. When they pop thru or "bounce" try the handle again.
Here's a tip: When you get ready to slide tandems, set your parking brake but leave the trailer air on. Or alternately, pop your trailer air and let it settle while leaving your tractor brakes off.
Most air-ride trailers will push forward against the tractor when the suspension settles. If you do like most drivers and yank both air valves at once, you probably just put the pins in a bind toward the front and created your own problem.
Should go without saying, but make sure you've rolled straight forward or back a few feet before you start too. If there's any twist tension on the trailer tandems from turning, that can bind things up too.TheDude1969 and Vito Thank this.
