    Hello!

A short while ago we've had a load that required tarp. Actually the broker said this: "The merchandise has been outside for weeks, the shipper doesn't require tarp but the receiver does. I recommend the tarp to be on".
When the truck was loaded, one of the shipper's employees presented the driver a paper stating that the company was not allowing anyone to tarp in their yard. Down the page was a note that tarping on the street meant $15,000 in fines.

The driver had to stop at the first truck stop and tarp. I was told that doing so was also illegal.

The broker didn't mention anything about the shipper not allowing the driver to tarp in their yard when I booked the load. The same thing happened 2 months ago with a different broker and a different shipper...

I wonder if it's legal for them to do so.

The shipper can do restrict what they want to restrict on their property. Nothing says you must have a tarp on any given piece of property at any given point in time, and nothing says a load can't be tarped somewhere between the shipper and the receiver.

You do what you have to do in these situations if you want to get paid. This scenario is actually more common then you may think.

I used to tarp off property a lot. 100 degrees in Lewiston ID when you load lumber? Run 100 miles up the river where it's cooler to tarp and you can take a dip when you're done. 30mph wind in Grangeville? Drop down off the hill and tarp in the canyon. If the weather is good many places will let you leave without tarping, just make sure it's on when you get there.

Since when is tarping at a truckstop illegal?? "Someone" who "told you" this is full of horse hockey. If the receiver pays for a tarped load you need to get'er done.

The shipper can make all the noise they want......I doubt they will physically prevent you from tarping there provided you pull out of the way. The big thing is they don't want to assume the liability for injuries associated with activity that they didn't request.

SMTathams advice is correct. Its all about liability issues and insurance. Shipper doesn't want to be responsible for an injury on their property when they in turn didn't request the product be tarped . But yes the consignee requires the load to be tarped. Get it done somewhere before you bring it in

Horse shyte, and tell that person to call me and I'll tell him that to his face.

Yeah, I find that to be quite funny as well, since they seem to allow self defecating in the lot, along with roaming Lot Lizards, driving at 40 mph and with the jake brake on.

I've had a few situations where I had to tarp my load at truck stops or somewhere other than where they loaded me. NYC and NJ shippers are often like that. They simply dont have the real estate needed to allow trucks to block the loading lanes or warehouses.

I've seen full blown engine rebuilds, Turbo's, air compressor rebuilds, transmissions, tires etc being done at truck stops. I've personally never been hassled tarping or re-tarping my loads. The driver should have enough intelligence to be able to make that call and where he can do it with out creating a problem.

Yes had to pull my front rear out of my old IH 4300 in the old Skelly Truckstop in Pocatello one time back in the 70's.Had an oversize rock truck on going to the pipeline build in Alaska.Parked my truck for the night, and got that horrible gear oil smell when I swung down out of the cab.My nosecone bearing had come apart on my power divider.I pulled the driveshaft out,and pulled the nosecone off,not a real hard repair, but broken bearings had gotten down in the intermediate, and down in the main carrier.I had to pull them both, just to check and clean everything out.First drain the gear oil into a HD garbage bag and pull the axles.Used a short chain and a cheater pipe over the frame with a ratchet binder to first pull the intermediate section off, then pull the main carrier out.Luckily there was a very helpful KW dealer down the street who felt sorry for me and ordered all the parts for me,from three different IH dealers in the area.He even let me use their company pickup to go down to the bus station when my parts came in.Put it all back together, rolled down to the truck stop garage, had her pumped full of gear oil,and off I went.Did lots of truckstop repairs. These were the things we used to do back then to save a few bucks, jeez.
