    If my wife is off duty when I start driving she gets a "team driver warning" that she must go on duty or 7 hour sleeper within 3 hours. Does that 7 hours have to be continuous? Our safety guy told us to make sure we go off duty when we go in truck stops and I mentioned this and he said that it wasn't a thing.

    Does anyone know what this warning means?

    Your wife should be in sleeper berth status when the tractor is mobile and she is not driving. Off duty means just that; you are off duty and doing nothing in regards to the truck.

    I'm purty sure the 7 hours needs to be continuous to qualify for a 7/3 sleeper berth split.

    It means what it says. The regs for team driving state that a driver can be in the passenger seat for up to 3 hours before or after (but not both) a 7 hour stayin the sleeper. And of course it's required to log sleeper if one is in the sleeper.

    From 395
    On-duty time means all time ...
    (4) All time in or on a commercial motor vehicle, other than:
    (iii) Up to 3 hours riding in the passenger seat of a property-carrying vehicle moving on the highway immediately before or after a period of at least 7 consecutive hours in the sleeper berth;

    So if I go on duty or off duty can she go off duty or does she have to stay in the sleeper?

    For example - I start driving and she goes in the sleeper. I stop and fuel - is she able to go off duty and go inside the truck stop?

    Technically she should go to off duty nefore going inside... But were it me I would stay in sleeper berth status and still go inside if I needed to use the facilities or get something.

    Ok, I'm speaking legally here, not what I would do or even best practice.

    Legally she has to log off duty if she's not in the sleeper. The thing is, it also requires 7 hours i the sleeper to be able to log off duty while in the passenger seat of a moving truck. She can be off duty in the passenger seat in a dock though. It simply doesn't count for the continuous 7 hour required in the sleeper.

    I'm going to agree and add a warning that this information may also be reported to your carrier. When it comes to HOS the least amount of contact you have with safety the better off you are!

    In the other thread, you never told me you were a team driver at big orange with your wife. Can we have a different conversation now? How efficiently do they utilize the truck as a team? Are you both driving close to ten hours per day?
