Men don't like going to doctors . OTR drivers with irregular schedules and not much home time would have a difficult time scheduling checkups if they wanted to . Most drivers have the attitude if they feel fine they have no problems . That isn't necessarily so . You can have prostate cancer for years before symptoms show up . By the time symptoms show up the cancer has often spread and is incurable . Early detection through testing is usually curable . http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/c...the_key_statistics_for_prostate_cancer_36.asp
Technology for treatment has advanced considerably in the past few years and side effects can be minimal . http://www.nashvilleroboticsurgery.com/davinci_prostatectomy.html
I read a post by a 57 year old man that had his prostate removed 7 years ago and has not had problems with incontinence or impotence . Impotence results not from prostate removal but from damage or removal of nerves near the prostate . In some cases nerve saving surgery can be performed . It depends on the cancer stage .
One issue not seen discussed regarding cancer is insurance coverage . This is very important in an industry where there may be frequent job changes . Insurers know prostate cancer is usually not aggressive and spreads very slowly . If you get new insurance coverage and soon after get a positive test for cancer they may try to say it is a preexisting condition and decline coverage .
Men usually aren't tested for prostate cancer until they are in their 50's but I read of an unusual case where a man in his early 40's went for treatment of what he thought was a urinary infection . He was found to have prostate cancer that had spread from the prostate and was incurable . Don't wait for symptoms to appear .
