Texas CDL Pretrip Fail

My dad took his skills test about a week ago and failed the pre-trip inspection. It’s our understanding that the pre-trip is split up into 3 parts: one of four sections of the vehicle (a, b, c, or all), coupling, and in cab. He got through all three parts in that order and was told at the very end that he failed. The instructor told him that she couldn’t legally say what it was that failed him. The instructor did give him a paper, though, with a diagram of a truck that said to study chapter 11 and circled the cab. He believes it was the in cab portion that caused him to not pass. Is anybody familiar with this part of the skills test in Texas? I know the entire test is split up into pre-trip, maneuvers, and road skills and if you fail one you can restart from there, but what about situations like this? He’s been told by his school that he would only have to redo incab but I feel like that doesn’t make sense? I’m not familiar with grading but I thought if incab is just one component of the pre-trip, then you would have to redo the entire section from the beginning since he failed it? He also said that one day when the school took them to the dps to practice that there were people not doing the other parts of the truck and going straight to in cab. That he was then told by his school that it’s because they failed the incab part of the pre trip and only had to retake that part. Can anybody clarify if this is correct? I can’t find much info on the dps website.

 

The CDL school should clarify what went wrong.

Private school. The instructor said that by federal law he couldn’t say what exactly failed him. All he gave him was the diagram with the cab circled so he knows what part of the pre trip he failed but not what was done wrong or missed.

If he has any more problems, I know two companies in Houston that hire with only a CDL Permit.

Thanks for this! His second attempt is tomorrow. Do you know what would happen if he failed his 3rd attempt, by chance? I know it says you have to submit a new application but does he have retake the permit test and go through school all over again?

His permit is still good.
Dock to driver doesn't require school and Labatt Foodservice doesn't require school. They're both authorized for acquiring a CDL.
