I work for a midwestern concrete pipe hauling company. It is based out of another state and has multiple locations dotted here around the midwest. Each location is run by a manager, and above him is a regional that is only in our area a couple of times a year.

Our mechanic has a separate boss that is never around and doesn't know his butt from a hole anyway. Anyways our Mechanic is stealing us blind. At first I just suspected, but after keeping as close a eye on him as I can (because I'm a driver you see, and I'm not around the shop much) he's stealing fuel, parts and whatever else he can get his hands on. What's worse he never puts in an honest days work.

Anyway, I'd like to pull the plug on this, but it's not like I have pictures of him doing any of this. I was thinking of writing a letter to the boss's but I've never narked anyone out.

Not a good idea driver. Any thoughts that the uppers will pat you on the back or you'll be moved to hero status are wrong. You could even be implicated as a disgruntled co-conspiritor. Carriers have systems in place to catch this kind of thing....and they will , eventually. Certain numbers won't work and they will start checking into the why not.

Remember, they trust him by occupation way more than they trust you ( by occupation )

I worked for a smaller 100 truck outfit once. They had a younger kid working in the shop. He would always steal your change and stuff like gum if you had it.

I told the office. They acted like they didn't want to hear it because he was family.

You can go to any sporting goods shop and they sell wildlife video camera's. Mainly for deer hunters. It's a small camera that's solar powered and has a motion detector. You strap it on a tree. It only comes on when something comes within 35 feet of it.

I now have one here at the house as a cheap form of security. Anyone that comes in my driveway is getting filmed. Nobody looks in trees or bushes for a camera. Playback is easy too because you don't have to fast forward like on regular surveilance.

But you could put something like that in your truck and they wouldn't know it was motion activated. He might steal it though! :)

Employee theft is very common, even more so than customers. Years ago, some municipality switch from gas engines to diesel. Their MPG's in their trucks nearly tripled.....because their previous MPG's included employee theft of gas ! None of the employees had diesel engines in their personal cars. My buddy worked for the city, alone on his shift at night. He got more paper towels, can liners and whatever else he could slip out un-detected. Heck, even Johnny Cash got enough parts from the factory to build a car, ONE PIECE AT A TIME !

If you are concerned and the boss should know I would have someone else make an anonymous phone call and tell them they should look into the matter. That way you are not involved. I worked at a very small trucking company that had another shop location other then the main terminal and the shop manager would close up for the night go home (lived next door) and eat dinner and then come back and do oil changes for local owner operators for cash. Never got caught and did it up until his death.

Sorry folks but I don't agree with the "I see nothing" attitude. The thief is stealing from you every time he hits the company. You gonna wait till he starts going thru the trucks and gets your personal stuff?

Been around small diesel shops all my life. My Dad worked in several shops while I was growing up. The first thing the new boss always wants to make sure of is that the new shop mechanic isn't stealing shop time (doing repairs with the company shop and pocketing the cash), supplies and parts, or using the company shop as his personal auto repair biz.

It's so common you wouldn't believe it. Not only will you look bad for saying something, but the boss already knows. He IS watching, he just won't fire him yet because the next guy can be worse.

You can type up a letter and remain anonymous. This way, nothing will tie to you. Don't tolerate thieves. Take action, and get them fired and/or arrested.

I agree, if someone worked for me, and was stealing, I would hope that someone who was honest, and observed it would let me know.

But then, unless I was hundreds of miles away, I would kep a close tab on operations.
