I was curious at what age you are retiring. Now about your question. Drive for somebody untill at least next spring or so. In the mean time look for a nice truck, get it ready and when the time comes, you will be ready to go. Market is very soft right now, it's probably the worst time to start since 08-09

    Terry270 Thanks this.

Stay with a company for at least 2 years. Save up for a truck and trailer with minimum overhead. Be away from home this whole time getting this and then realize that being a compay driver pays u better with full benefits and if its local u will b home every night after working 10 + hours a day.
Look into something else enjoy your family

Thanks for the replies. I'm not looking at "anything else" I am looking for OTR. I am not opposed to working for a company/mega carrier to get my stripes. Well maybe some mega carriers. I am possibly looking to be regional flat bed or reefer in the Southwest.

Regional does pay less but look for a company with a sliding pay scale. Flatbed is good but u dont get paid much for tarping and securing the load and all the load checks u have to do. If u run regional u will b doing this as much as u drive. U make money when the wheels r turning

What he said. And I will add that with all the companies going under right now there will be many awesome deals on trucks in the months to come. If you have the cash to pick one up and sit on it you will be golden
