There are no special rules for truck drivers. You are expected to be in compliance with the laws in every location you are located or travel through. The federal Firearms Owner Protection Act FOPA is meant to be protection for a person in legal possession of a firearm, who transports a legal weapon from one location where owner/firearm are legal to another location where owner/firearm are legal to possess without TOO MUCH concern for the states in between the origin and destination. However, some states like NY or IL may simply arrest and prosecute you on state/local charges in which case FOPA does you little good. Some states like NJ consider you guilty of a felony just for having the most common self-defense ammo in the state, even if you have no firearm. Some states have a 10 round limit on magazines, that may have just been overturned in court, but maybe not.
There are only 2 ways to be legal everywhere. 1) be unarmed, 2) be an on-duty or retired cop with a badge. In every other situation you have to know the local law for the place you are located concerning the person and the firearm.
USCCA has a good handle on the various state laws. https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/resources/ccw_reciprocity_map/
I'd more likely carry a handgun limited to 10 rounds if I was going to bring a firearm than a long gun. If I was going to carry a long gun I would bring a shotgun, not an AR, but that's personal preference.Bean Jr., nextgentrucker and cuzzin it Thank this. -
Look, I get the concerns, but here’s the thing—I’m not too worried about what the carrier or the laws say. Out here, it’s about staying safe, and I’m going to do what I feel I need to. If that means having an AR and a sidearm in the truck, then that’s what I’ll carry. I’m not going to wait for something bad to happen to figure out if I made the right choice.
I get that a sidearm is better for close encounters, but the AR gives me more options. I’d rather have it and not need it than be caught without it.
So yeah, I’m carrying what makes me feel safe. Appreciate the feedback, but I’ll take my chances with what I think is best. Stay safe out there. -
From the ATF web site
I have a NFA firearm and I’m moving. What do I do?
A registered possessor of an NFA firearm, other than a federal firearms licensee/special occupational taxpayer (FFL/SOT), may not lawfully transport in interstate or foreign commerce any destructive device, machinegun, short-barreled shotgun or short-barreled rifle without prior written approval of ATF, specifically the NFA Branch.
Approval for the transportation may be obtained by either a written request, or an approved application filed with ATF on Form 5320.20, Application to Transport Interstate or to Temporarily Export Certain NFA Firearms. Please note that applications to transport NFA firearms will be approved only if consistent with all state and local laws. -

I'm 98% sure that if you say "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" you are both authorized to carry any firearm anywhere AND you also are given an attorney free of charge if you are arrested on any local, state, or federal firearms charge, or that's what the Easter Bunny told me.

You will be going to jail/prison.
It is your responsibility to know the law, something you stated you are unfamiliar with. Not knowing them is not a defense. What makes it even more a good potential, is you claim to have a CCW, where you should have been taught the basics of the laws. -
I hear an Abram’s tank, or a smaller compact RPG also fit well behind the seat. You know, for preparedness and all.
Oxbow, snowlauncher, gentleroger and 11 others Thank this.
