My Father has started running at a different company,we are used to 550hp to 600hp C15s and just poppin gears at 1500 on the high side. Since We have changed companys we are in new emissons truck and they pull horrible because of the new transmissions trying to return MPG. We haul milk and are ALWAYS over 95,000 pounds. MPG is no object because its already crap at around 5mpg which were getting 7 outta the old cat. Im pretty sure its a 435 engine with a 9 speed and we have no idea what rear ends. What Rpm is best for pulling power and what rpm should we drop gears. Right now we shift 1500 on flat in the high range and on hills around 1700 and were barely getting up hills at 45. When we ran the Cats we were around the same weight and those things would get up and go. Our average shift Rpms on flat ground go like such. starting in lets say 1st gear so 2nd at 1100 3rd at 1200 4th at 1300 then 5th at 1400 then hit the high range and run 6th 1500 7th 1500 8th 1500 and 9th 1500. should we be running the rpms higher, when should we down shift on a hill ?

I’ll stay out of it....daf105paccar, Oxbow, Bean Jr. and 2 others Thank this. -
At 430hp you are purple.pushbroom, Intothesunset, daf105paccar and 1 other person Thank this. -
Here is brochure for EPA 10 engines and how supposed to be speced gear wise. They tend to need more RPM vs EPA 13 and up.

Smaller engines like to wind more than the large engines. With my 2 B trucks and my N14, it was ok to pull them down, even to 1,100 rpm. With a 12.7, pulling it under 1,400 is discouraged.
Intothesunset Thanks this. -
Well the mx13 I’m with seems to pull best between the 1200-1500 range after that it loses most of its pulling power. These small engines like to run low anything past 1500 you’re wasting power and fuel. Now I would rev it to 1700 if you’re coming up a steep hill just so the turbo gets going by the time you get lugged to 1500-1600 so you can get the most pull.
If you’re already doing this you’re just not used to these weaker emissions engines. They don’t pull like the old CATs or Detroits. Just a world we live in now. That’s why I try my best to build up speed if I know I’m climbing a hill that way I only have to gear down maybe once. -
I think that truck in general is just wrong for the job it's doing but being that it's a company truck not much you can do about it. The only thing I can think of to make it more drivable would be to see if that 9 speed can be converted to a 13 speed.
Trucker186, daf105paccar and Goodysnap Thank this. -
430hp is to low a setting,combined with a 9 speed............. -
The MX13 is a pushrod engine but the last one I drove 2016 I would wind it up to 1800 rpm it did not care that I drove it like a 12.7 troit. And fuel avg was 6.5 avg. With reefer box loaded full most days. It was 455hp, 13 manual, and 1500 rpm was 75 mph goverend.
