Ha! Congratulations on the baby boys. Yea, kids can make being over the road not so good. My baby girl is pretty much grown up, graduated high school this spring and is off to start classes at college soon, I am so proud. If you want to get into pulling a flatbed wagon I would look for an outfit with about 200 trucks or so, down in your state or in the area. You may have to wait till you have a couple of years under your belt, but I have noticed lately thats not so much a requirement anymore. Companies want to hire new drivers and will train you. Insurance companies are putting a lot of pressure on the trucking companies for drivers with "clean" records and who else has a cleaner record than a new guy? Look at the doors of the trucks at fuel stops...especially when you start getting near home you will notice the flatbed/van companies around and watch for the company drivers with clean newer nice equipment(3yrs or less). That is what you want. Talk to em, they will yack their heads off at you because its cash in their pocket if they refer a driver who gets hired on. Dont be surprised if he whips out a business card and gives you his #. You can look online but it can be tricky to read between the lines...the best info comes from the drivers. Generally the pay goes up from pulling a van to reefer then flatbed.(I said generally!..dont want to start an argument yall) There is also another way you can go. Look at some of these larger companies like US Express and try to find a dedicated route through the house...you find a good run, you could be home every weekend plus two or three days during the week.
