I just got off the phone with IFTA and they said the only two things they need is

    1. Miles Driven Per State
    2. How many gallons purchased per state

when I asked him if you need to keep track of how miles you have driven per highway he said no that would be ridiculous to keep track of.

The reason for this is to verify the mileage reported on the tax forms. How can you expect the auditors to know the routes taken?

Many companies do not require the driver to do this, but just figure the routes for the reports on their own.

I've driven for three companies during my career that required miles and routes in each state. These were leave Sunday, back in Tuesday, back out Wedsday, home Friday type companies.

From my experience and being at a company when the tax man goes in and does their audit I have to agree with the other poster. The man that got hit for 11 grand was probably under reporting, not filing his quarterly reports and not reporting State's he was travelling through. I have only heard of your miles driven in each State, not the roads. Just a thought, How would they prove whcih roads you drove on to begin with? If they aren't toll roads and you only posted the routes where you got fuel I don't see how they could jam you. Just my opinion though.

Never heard of keeping track of actual miles per road, but miles per state AND the roads travelled are very important. Had an IFTA audit last year and the auditor takes the trip sheets, loads each and every trip into a routing program and then validates that against what we reported. The audit covered 8 quarters and 6 trucks. Slight discrepancy resulted in an additional $163 tax due. Audit took about 3 months to complete.

I'm wondering. Has anyone ever gotten a refund, or credit for "over reporting"? Obviously, if one can err one way, why not the other?

Yes, you can. Especially if the majority of the fuel is purchased in the higher taxing states. It would not be a large refund.

I had to re read the post as well a few times. I long time ago, I was driving for a small co. that wanted every single road I was on and mileage driven on that road. Then total all mileage driven.
It NEVER made sence to me, nor could the manager provide an answer.
Something like 65 miles on I35, 184 miles on Hwy 494, 9 miles on Co Rd 5....
    Complete Bu$##$^!
    Good luck with that.

In the 4th quarter of 2008, I got back .71 cents. This was not from "over reporting" or cheating, rather just from me buying fuel right, most of it in higher tax states like Florida and Illinoiz. For the first quarter of 2009, I owed $1.78.

I've never heard of, or have done, any reporting of the particular highways traveled either. Just miles and gallons.
