What is the highest safe temperature wheels ends on a trailer can run at? I did 4 wheel seals and used Stemco ProTorq nuts. I may not have backed off the nuts enough. I did 1/4 turn per the instructions but I don't like the temps I am seeing.

I can not answer that temp question as I still use my hand when I come in off the road. A hot tire is usually low on air. A hot hub usually has a bearing or brake problem. Yes use caution as to not get burned.
Do not like to see gear oil running over about 250 degrees. Thank that is way hot unless you have been on the brakes hard.
I found different people in the shop have different ideas and or feel for what 1/4 turn is. Started doing a high torque while turning the wheel. Back off a bit and torque to 25 Ft Lbs while turning the wheel. Back it off a bit if required to install the lock.
Have had good luck that way.

I followed the torqueing procedure before backing them off. I reused all the bearings and cones. I pulled the original tires off this trailer so it doesn't have many miles on it. Three of 4 seals were leaking due to infrequent use of the trailer prior to me buying it or Timpte used a crappy type of seal. The factory seals had wear rings on the axles. Hub cap vents were open.

I will have to use a hot gun on the some to see. Others should be able to answer. I just know if I come off the road and have not been using the brakes much. I can hold my hand on the hubs even when it is 100 degrees outside.

I agree. Normally you can put a hand on a hub and at most it will feel warm. I carry a temp gun for checking hubs, tires, rears etc.
Going to the tarp shop on Monday they were 135. Coming home today they were 140. Not really hot for bearings and oil but higher than normal for me.
On the flip side, running loaded I would think hubs would get more than just warm to the touch which is what I usually see. Common sense to me would say that 2 bearings carrying the weight they do and turning at the speed they turn, the hub should be more than just warm to the touch.

Make sure you did adjustment procedure for your Pro Torque nut #.
Different nuts have different backing angle.

I don't recall the part number for that nut but it is segregated from the others in the list of nuts and amount to back off.

@BoxCarKidd I haven't chased down my starter issue yet. It works properly about 90% of the time.

Trailers coming in today were averaging about 140 F hub temperature.

Thank you very much. I wonder if for many years we could have been running wheel ends tighter than we did. I have bought several new trailers through the years and none ever ran this hot. One hundred forty degrees makes sense to me but I had never seen it.
