I am buying a truck to pull a propane transport. What daycab engine combo will best work for this job? I'm lookin at an IH 8600 with ISM 425 10 speed 3.90 ratio. Is this good or bad?

Does not sound too bad.I like 3.58 ratio.8600 International is kind of a no frills truck.
Thinking of new or used?425 is a good efficient H.P. I like a 10 speed. How many miles do you expect to drive per.day.8600 international should be easy to drive.It should have good turning radius.
I drove a Freightliner M2-112 day cab.450 H.P.mercedes 10 speed 3.58 ratio. I liked everthing except the mercedes motor. I think you are on the right track with the cummins.Last edited: Feb 11, 2009

Thanks for the reply. I will be doing about 500 miles a day. A used truck is the way to start out I think. Its a local gig in my home area. Why didn't you like the MBE4000? I have heard that they are big power with great mileage, although they are loud. Some tank haulers around here say they get 8 mpg with the mercedes. Should a guy make sure to get over drive?

Mercedes motors have a bad oil filter system on them.IT is a filter that fits in a canister.We had our oil changed at a speed-co in Indianapolis In.WE took a load to Chicago Ill.during a freezing rain storm.On the return trip warning lights came on.Smelled oil,Got it into Stoops Freightliner in Indianapolis.Freightliner said it had a collapsed oil filter because Speed-co used a Baldwin filter instead of a mercedes filter.Later the service superviser said he thinks Ice built up in the blow-by tube causing to much pressure in the motor.The truck always seemed to have a lot of blow by.We bought the truck new.I never really trusted it after that.
I now drive a 2007 Westernstar with a series 60 detroit.
I think you should go with an over drive transmission.How much weight will you be pulling? If you are sold on an International you might want to look at a 9200.I think they might have a little better cab than the 8600.
Also we had the mercedes for 2 yrs.We drove it 200000 miles.We hauled loads that averaged 25000lbs. WE got 6.5 mpg on average.Last edited: Feb 12, 2009

How is the Detroit you are driving? Is it the 12.7 or 14 and what the mileage with that? I have looked at the the 9200i. They are nice. They seem to be teamed up with the C13 Cat or the ISX mostly. I'm not sure about those motors and their reliabilty and fuel mileage. What about the auto trannys? I'm not sure I trust them and am worried about break down and repair costs, are they any good? What the banter on super single tires? I see more trucks with them, are they good? As far as weight, 9200 gallons of propane is about 41000 lbs

We own two 4900 series Westernstars.One is a 2006 mine is a 2007.We bought both of them new.They both have 14.0 515 h.p.10 speed trans.3.58 rears. We get in the 6 mpg range in the winter and 7plus mpg.
in the summer months.My dad owns these 2 trucks as well as a Freightliner with a mercedes motor that he drives.
We traded the Freightliner that I was telling you about in the earlier post because of the mercedes motor and my dad wanted to buy a new truck with a pre-emmisson motor.We were having good luck with the 2006 Westernstar so we bought another one just like it.I love it.
I thought I wanted a International Pro-star.I test drove one with a ultra-shift automatic in it.I liked it.I wish I could have pulled a loaded trailer with it.We did not buy it because it was not a pre-emmison motor and it had a price of $116,000.00 dollars.WE paid $100,000.00 dollars for the 2007 Westernstar and it was identical to our 2006.
I have mixed feelings about a automatic transmission.I would be afraid of a used one.I think I might like driving one.I think if I was buying a used truck I would have to go with a manual probably a good old eaton fuller 10 speed.
I have heard that cummins motors have problems with egr valves going bad.There are some threads on them in 18 wheeler section.
I dont know much about a cat. Some guys that is all they will drive.I think the c15 cat is more popular.
My only motor advice is I would buy anything other than a mercedes.
Do you look at trucks on ######? There are some 2006 9200 in Wisconsin with only 80000 miles for sale.Last edited: Feb 13, 2009

So the 14 liter Detroit gets you pretty good mileage at 515 hp. Is your truck a day cab or a sleeper cab? Day cabs are lighter trucks so I figured it would help on the fuel mileage. Have you had any problems with the Detroit? Are they pretty reliable? I was thinking Detroit, Cummins or Cat would be the best picks. Mainly because they are the most common american Diesels and a guy should be able to get them fixed up anywhere. I do like the Volvo tractor although I have been told that the VED 12 motor is a dog even at 435 hp. The trucks ride real nice. I have been looking to see whats out there. Your posting blocked out the name of whatever truck sales your were telling me about. I mainly look local or the Paper that sells Trucks.
A tank trailer doesn't allow you to slid the wheels up for load balance, is there a wheel base that is best? I was going for 171" to 200" just to keep it manuverable.

My truck is a road tractor with a sleeper. I like a detroit. The thing is you were looking at Internationals and if you buy a late model it will have a cummins or a cat,detroits are not available in late model Internationals.
If you want a detroit you will have to look at a Freightliner or Westernstar.
If you go with a volvo it will have a cummins or a volvo motor. I have been in a Volvo.I do not like the clutch and gas petal in a volvo. They are small like driving a pick-up truck.
Peterbilts and Kenworth will have a cummins or cat. A kenworth t-800 might be a good tractor for a LP tanker. They do have a small cab but,I think they are a good truck.
Macks are tough trucks. I think they are reliable. It will have a Mack motor.
I think you are on the right track on wheel base 200 in. Or less. That is with a day cab. -
I'm not set on any one truck just yet. That is why I am asking for info from people like you. I would take a freight shaker with a S60 14.0 Detroit set somewhere in the 430 to 470 hp range. (Does this engine have big power?) That would be a great starter truck and they don't cost a lot. It doesn't have to be fancy, just reliable and good fuel mileage (6.5 mpg to 7.5 mpg).
You commented on the Mack saying its a "tough" truck. What does that mean? Are they fuel efficient and reliable? I like the look of the Mack but that is all I know about them. I'm still lookin in that paper that sells trucks to see if I can find anything that stands out. I will be lookin to buy in a couple months so I'm trying to get whatever info I can about the diffrent brand of trucks.
