    Dear trucker community,

While doing some antenna simulation I finally got to the point where I am modeling the truck itself. Then it dawned on me that newer trucks might have more fiberglass and less conductive metals in their makeup.

If you would be so kind to answer some questions they are:

Are the side mirror brackets electrically conductive to the truck body or frame?

Are truck bodies now often made of fiberglass?

What are the trailers made of these days?

Once upon a time we antenna engineers could always rely on vehicles providing a marvelous ground plane. The move away from conductive skins has made antenna integration, well, interesting.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

    John

TODAY'S trucks are made from Aluminum, Fiberglass, plastics & anything that is light weight . There is very little steel & that is why drivers are having so many GROUNDING , SWR, & noise problems. It is tough to find an antenna that will work & next to impossible to find one antenna that will work in every circumstance . Personally , I slip seat (drive a different tractor ) because I fill-in while others get sick , get fired etc. the only antenna that I have found that works for this type of use is a Wilson No-Ground 3 footer with a special coax & tuner. It IS NOT AS GOOD as a regular Ground type antenna but the tuner will allow you to "fool" your radio with a TUNED SWR so it will not damage the CB . I like having my CB so I can live with this small compromise. A less than perfect CB is better than NO CB at all.

    Now to answer your questions
    # 1- No some cabs & mirrors do not ground at all. The metal mirrors fasten to fiberglass / composite doors which is fastened to a cab that sits on rubber air bags to smooth out the ride.

    # 2- Yes there are lots of them made of fiber glass now a days.

    # 3- AS far as trailers go......well the skies the limit !! Trailers can be as varied as your imagination. Flatbed, tanker, grain , tarp sided & tarp topped, van w/ alum. roof or fiber glass roof , dump trailer etc. etc.......

    GROUND PLANE.......What's a ground plane now-a -days ??????????:biggrin_25516:

Thanks for your interest though ! Do you build or design antennas ???
Do you have any ideas for these new style trucks ?
We are looking for NEW ideas & you have my support & INTEREST !
