Just read where turnover among the mega carriers is starting to creep up again to over 100% a year, after supposedly declining the past 10 years or so. They're getting desperate now in those outifts, so if you're driving for one, remind them of what you're worth. Ask for a raise. Ask for better home time. Why's it starting to creep up again? Same reasons as always, with a couple more reasons added. The new HOS rules. The micromanaging of drivers. The ELD nonsense. The new medical requirements for a lot of guys when it comes to the sleep apnea BS. Plus the older guys are leaving and not being replaced, as young guys don't look at trucking as a job worth training for now.

PS--I've gotten postcards, emails, and phone calls regularly the last couple of years from companies I used to work for, they're so desperate for drivers now. Companies that boasted about how many people they fired for trivial things while I was working there. Now I wonder if they're still boasting? Let the megas burn. Don't appreciate drivers and treat them live slaves? You get what you deserve. I'd love to see the biggest of the bigs go down in flames. If the Big 4 or so all went out of business today, drivers' pay would go up industry-wide by at least 20% by tomorrow.

Is it possible this is from the general economy improving? Many people including myself went to CDL school because the job market was horrible. Maybe that is getting better and people are able to find more non-Trucking jobs?

I don't understand why this happens. My only driver to quit in the last decade did so to become an owner, and he still frequently pulls my trailer, probably 30 days a year he pulls for me. He pulls for about a dozen places and is kept so busy he has a driver part time on his truck as well.

Locally all companies are looking for drivers but none have raised their rates enough to attract fresh blood. .46 cpm to .50cpm. DRIVERS WANTED billboards in front of terminals. Dog and pony shows where only a few people show up. Companies are holding firm.
Immigrants don’t flock to my neck of the woods
Only one company pays less,,, .40 cpm to run USA:eek:

Because the stock market plummeted again to a point where we’re in the red again. When the market dropped 500+ points all the gains from 2018 were effectively WIPED OUT!!

Markets rise and fall. Sometimes takes the freight out with it. Temporarily.

Pay has to come up. This 30, 40 etc has to stop. The trend to changing numbers depending on length for haul, gaurantees but with gotchas and disq's and other games with driver income all have to stop. If a solo can get say 800 miles put away in a 16 hour driving time mid to mid then let's pay that solo .65 a mile call it 520 dollars daily flat. IF any on duty time is incurred do it at 15 or 20 dollars a hour. So if a driver put in 14 hours counting little boxes against a spreadsheet (Ty McCormick Spices...) it will be closer to a 300 dollar day. So 6 days of trucking OTR should come out to around 3000 gross weekly for solo. No complaining, moaning or groaning about miles etc allowed.

If you have two drivers team in there, preferably a husband wife. Pay them 6000 gross and be done with it whatever miles they run. They are going to be putting down 6000+ miles for you anyway each week. If they stayed out all year they would MAYBE be in a position to buy a Semi and trailer and lease onto your fleet with you putting a driver into it. Or something like that. In 5 years we might have 5 trucks and 5 drivers sets. Who knows. Employees paid enough to grow and thrive... ESPECIALLY able to become a powerhouse in their own right in support of your own fleet You are going to be in a pretty good position before too long.

They have been flogging the driver shortage BS for decades now. It's a dead horse. What is REALITY is the PAY shortage. Start paying them like the professionals they should be then you will not have a problem anywhere.
