Well you weren't legal before. So now you have to run legally. Maybe take a stop off the truck to make it home?

This is general answer ,the elogs are updated every few months and their ,against driver income, safety ,sleeping ,and building a lot of stress .
The recent update ,as example ,if you stop for few minutes just to make phone call ,and switch to off duty ,when you move again it's became as a solid line of driving ,This is crime against drivers and working people I'm going to post a new topic about it

That has to be carrier specific. The Elog doesn't do that sort of thing in my truck. If I just stop in at a truckstop to Transflo a bill or grab something, I then take off, the time off duty is still off duty. Now maybe some carrier has their software set up the way you describe, but that is not the norm, nor is it required.

So to answer your question no you will not be able to drive while in "on duty" status with elogs. They will sense the truck moving at some point and automatically switch you to driving status. As for the discussion about when the elog will switch you to driving status it will be determined by the company that owns the machine. My company uses qualcom and I can not go faster then 4mph for more then .5 mile without it switching.

Now for some bad news for drivers that dont care for elogs. Last december elogs were offically mandated for all commercial vehicles and buses so now everyone will have to use elogs by no later then december 2017. It is basicly DOT keeping eveyone honest and legal. Also there are rumors going around that DOT found out about the ability of us to operate the vehicle under 5mph without the log recognising it and is in the works to correct that also. Dont expect that little bit of leway to be around for much longer. Here is a link to the FMCSA article about mandating elogs.

Currently I believe companies still have some discretion as to when their devices automatically switch to driving. My people net has a skip button and I can just keep it off duty and drive away. The mandate though was specific in its language and said something to the effect that 5mph will automatically put you into driving. There was a provision for yard moves where you could be on private property and stay on line 4. When the devices we use get updated to that standard it will make things harder. It's pretty common now to park either at a customer or very near and do a first pick or drop while still off duty in the morning. It'll be pretty hard not to trigger driving with a 5mph threshold going forward. The beginning and ending odometer will have to be part of the log too. Any driving while logged off will have to be accounted for by the driver. They didn't leave a lot of wiggle room.

Do you know where we can get a look at the mandate. I would like to read it in full

I find this very interesting. They (.gov) think this is all on the drivers, but really it's going to be on the shippers and receivers. Sure, within the yard, you just work it out so either a yard dog does all the hooking up and such (so it doesn't start YOUR log) but at a shipper, you sit there for hours as they unload it one box at a time (JFC really how can it possibly take so long) and you're out. Now, you just drove slowly off the door. After this new mandate. Sorry, out of hours, elogs on, not my problem. guess you lose a door for the next 10 hours. bye. slam door.

or have to do a whole lot more, drop teh trailer and bobtail somewhere while you still have time on your clock and their yard dog will have to move them around. I see lots of unanticipated issues.

I think a major problem is that moving a truck at a shipper or receiver property, no matter the speed is on duty, not driving. Stuck in traffic, even if the elog switches to on duty, not driving, is driving.

that's my point. Now you can cheat this by moving slowly not too far and it won't flip over on duty and/or driving and stay "off duty"/sleeper berth

but with this new way, ti's going to flip on duty and /or driving and boom that's it. Sorry out of hours, not moving it.

Remember, log violations are on the driver, not the company.

    Bean Jr. Thanks this.
