Got a deleted volvo d13 that's randomly shutting down, but in a very odd way and haven't ran across this before.

When it's acting up consistently it shuts down at 40s within a tenth of a sec everytime. When it's stationary the engine will just shut down. If it's on the road at the 40sec mark it loses throttle, but will run at idle for as long as I let it coast. While coasting the ishift will downshift through the gears, but engine rpms do not bump up like it should. Just stays at idle rpms. Once it stops the engine shuts down.

Will restart without having to cycle the key off and will run for the next 40secs then shutdown again. I've monitored the usual eng protection shutdown sensors and others (oil pressure, fuel delivery pressure, eng temp, key switch status, ecm voltage) but haven't found one that would act up before it shutsdown or drops out after going to an idle while coasting.

Runs great other than it says #### off every 40secs and wants a break. No smoke, good power, engine runs smooth, no faults active or inactive. Occasionally will run for minutes or hours without issues. Then act up consistently. Making it difficult to narrow down potential causes.

Any input or ideas would help.

Question for you. If it is deleted, how are you reading faults? When deleted, the check engine light on dash is suppressed in the reprogramming of the ECM. You will need PTT 1.12 (old version) of techtool or jpro to read active/inactive codes. Newest versions of techtool, 2.xx, will show no active/inactive faults. I am only trying to help because IIRC you are active military? If I broke a rule posting please delete.

We don't delete volvos here. This company has them deleted somewhere else and not very well. Some the fleets trucks still throw active faults for emissions and regen regen related issues, but the light doesn't come on in the dash.

Been using jpro and techttool. Mostly tech tool for monitoring sensors and jpro to read for faults. However the programming is done for the ecm where they get it done at...we can still read faults using new version of techtool. Just dont have some of the test and calibration options.

Tried looking through techtool parameter settings to see if eng protection shutdown could be shutoff to see if that would be a possible cause due to the timing that it shuts down everytime, but it had a 0-100 setting. Not individual enable options like some other engines.

And I'm not in the military anymore.

I had similar issues and ending up being bad ECM and replacement ECM from Volvo/Mack parts had issues too with engine brake. Not impressed with them at all. We had sister truck to verify ECM issues.

Did you ever solve your jake brake issue? Had ECM replaced too several times resulting in Jake brake not working. I ended up buying one from Volvo dealer but still the same issue.

ECM fixed it, but two before we got a good one. Trucks were sold at auction, so glad to see them go. Same guy bought both, called months later and other one had ECM fail. Not a fan of the Volvo/Mack motors.

Not a fan of em either. I'm gonna have to switch to something else maybe with a Paccar engine

Our fleet has been running the Paccar MX-13 since 2012, have proven to me to be a pretty decent engine platform.

    Hallo sir,
I’m having the exact same problem with same engine, could you please let me know what was the issue and did you have it resolved? Thank you in advance, Mike
