I'm in need of some more advice guys. I'm sitting over width waiting out vail. Road conditions claim snow pack and ice on roadways up there. I've been here 3 days now. My question is when the permit says snow, ice, wind, etc as conditions that you can't drive in...they do mean any amount is that correct? I feel I shouldn't play with these guys on this particular subject..I even called the scale to ask what the road is doing up there first hand to which I got a response of "if you make it up here, were going to stop you and figure out why you did." Am i doing the right thing by not rolling the dice...or do you think they're just saying that to cover their tails?

While we wait for someone with actual experience in OS/OW, my advice would be to stick with what your permit and what the scale said. DOT gets really shirty about oversized freight, especially in bad weather conditions.
-
That's what I figured. I'm just starting to cut my teeth doing oversize otr so I wanted to be certain. I don't wanna go bending rules that aren't flexible but I'm not trying to be the "IM NOT GOING" driver either.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing, whats your company or broker saying about sitting for 3 days? After this load I would be staying out of the west coast the rest of the season let someone else sit for days.
-
That's a tough pull up to the Eisenhower and down. Very dangerous too. You don't want to stop on the top either. High altitude and may make you sick or dizzy especially at night. Where are you right now?
-
I haven't spoken with the broker personally on this one but the place I loaded up tells me that the company is run by a gentleman who still drives so I would imagine he understands. My boss wasn't thrilled but there is nothing I can do. Hopefully they get it broken up. I'm sitting down at grand junction. Loma port of entry gave me the heads up about the weather. By the time I had waited on 3 to 9 weekend curfew to pass it snowed here which stuck me. Then vail got hit with chain enforcement yesterday so here I sit lol

I would just keep an eye on weather reports (accuweather.com and colorado road reports) and call the scale multiple times a day. If they say it's good to go make sure to get their name.
Big_Red Thanks this. -
You're doing the right thing. I know that it's hard to sit and that the temptation to boot-leg it is strong but don't do it. I don't know what the fines are out there for being in violation of permit but where we truck they're huge.
Bad weather won't last forever. Sit tight, be legal, but most of all be safe.Captain Canuck and Big_Red Thank this. -
I've been watching the weather up there it's warmed up some so hopefully tommorrow I can go. The only legal way around is back to salt lake and up through wyoming on i80 but that would be ridiculous so it is what it is. I've got books and movies so it's not the end of the world. Killed my week though lol

temperatures were really cold throughout the country last night. you might be sitting for days waiting for ice to melt on that mountain. it's not exacty wide open to sunshine.
on another note. wyoming might be closed also. they were, 2 days ago.
where did the load pick up at anyways?
