well if i am remembering correctly, a union shop like Yellow hires casual workers and pays them very well just no benefits. when you get hired on, THEN your pay was reduced, BUT you get the benefits. then you go up the union pay scale.

i know this as when i was younger i had applied to Yellow, got the interview and road test, but when it came down to it, being hired as a casula there was at that time, no guarantee on hours i could work, and i had to "sit by the phone" basically all day waiting for a call.

i said screw it, i need work every day. but there is always someone willing to work only a few hours, just not me.

The Walgreens drivers might not even get paid
    By the hour.
When I done it They got paid a flat rate per trip,
    No overtime for them.
I would make the trip down there and ask some of
Their own drivers how they get paid and how much,
    Before I jump ship.

that's right, and if i know some people, there will be throat cutting for the routes, and maybe even extra runs to make a decent paycheck.

either a salary for the week, or hourly pay for me when doing such work, plus maybe even stop pay?

that way, at least the senior drivers have what they want, and the bottom feeders take what's left, or go get another job.

See if they will give you that in writing. I would think that DC to DC loads would be palletized. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a bait and switch deal.

If it was as he said, wouldn't the retail store drivers be fighting over it?.

Thanks again for all that commented.

I turned down the job. After reading the comments regarding the retail store deliveries, I pressed the recruiter and asked if there was a chance that I would be relegated to a retail delivery route.

Me: If hired full time, is the position going to remain a DC-->DC job, or would I then begin doing deliveries to retail stores?

    Her response:
"While working with Centerline or Walgreens your route might change depending on the job need"

Uh huh....so I'm guessing that if Billy Bob calls in sick or needs the day off, they'll be looking for the low man to cover.

If it was strictly DC-->DC, I would have taken it. But I know myself well enough to admit that I am way too far out of shape to be doing ramp work.

Besides, as Redtwin mentioned.... if it was easier than retail deliveries and paid the same, wouldn't those guys be all over these kinds of positions? I would tend to think so too.

Seems to me that Walgreens, Dollar General, Family Dollar all are looking for drivers ALL the time.. I just don't think any of these accounts are worth putting my CDL at risk.. the tight spaces in and out, the risk of hurting myself doing all the grunt work.. I think that's why they are always looking for drivers..

The reason they are always looking for drivers is because they don't pay what the job is worth. There are many companies such as food service or beverage where their drivers work much harder, but they don't have problems with driver retention because the pay and benefits they offer are worth doing the work.

I am with you though, I just don't think they are worth the risk to my health. I have suffered with back problems in the past and I don't see any of these companies paying enough for me to risk serious injury.

Yes.. you are right.. a former close friend of mine is with DOT FOODS and loves it! He is a relay driver so doesn't do unloads because he's "old" lol.. like me! But, he makes great $$$ and the guys who do the unloads make about $20,000 more a year than him!
I am happy where I am at a reasonably steady pace with a reasonably good income.. until I retire.. :) Hope all you guys are good this Labor Day! :):)
