I've been gone overseas for 3 or 4 months and when we return, the lawn looks like it did when we left.
Automatic underground sprinklers come on twice a day for a few minutes and water the plants only.
No one even owns a lawnmower because it's not needed.

My place is a small cottage outside the city. Quite peaceful, nothing fancy but it’s paid for. Even though it’s paid for, taxes, insurance, HOA, water, electric, gas, security camera / internet, taxes. Run me $680 a month. I’m home 2-4 days on average a month and even when I get longer periods of time off, I usually go on a trip or go visit family. Sometimes I don’t see my place for three months at a time.i don’t think it’s worth it, I could just stay in a nice hotel on home time and still save. But if I ever get off the truck, it’ll be a full time home and I like knowing that. I put it on Airbnb but the HOA im in won’t allow it.

You're very fortunate having a home paid for. And even better, you and all truckers are one DOT physical away from being unemployed which makes having a home paid for a blessing.

How about a high-rise condo with a mountain view in Reno?

I don't know if this is done, but if I were OTR, I'd try out different AirBnB's until I found one I liked and consider that "home base". Book it for the time you'll be "home", without having to deal with maintenance, upkeep, fixing the lawnmower, sprinkler system, dealing with burst pipes when you get home, etc. You can have a social life, doctor's appointments, a church family, etc.

Yep we’re all one incident, one mistake one missed thing on an inspection, you could name it a list of mile long away from being out of trucking. Kind of a sober thought when you stop and think about it. One advantage I have, though is that I didn’t get into trucking until later in life. I’ve done about a half dozen other professions. And I’ve got a couple of decades of management experience. So it wouldn’t take me about an hour to find another job if need be. I do OTR work because as crazy as it sounds. I actually enjoy it although it has its moments. If and when I don’t enjoy it anymore, I’ll do something else. When I meet drivers out on the road, who have spent their whole life in trucking, I have the utmost respect. I’ve been at it going on eight years now, I can’t imagine 30 or 40 years of OTR work.

Appreciate all the thoughts on the subject. After 3 years I've figured out OTR to the point where trip planning and driving is pretty much automatic and overall it's not bad to get paid to drive around the country and listen to podcasts. Everybody knows this job has its moments but I'd say most days are fairly routine after a while.

All that said, I do want to have a place to come home to at some point. Probably not this year, but I'd like to start planning for something eventually and was wondering if it could be doable running maybe regional or dedicated. All signs seem to point to local as the obvious choice, but I'm not sure I want to make a jump that big. I have some things to figure out!

I used a motel for years, kept a car there and was much cheaper than rent

Theres regional runs for drivers practically anywhere they live.
Local work will drive a person crazy with stress, especially someone that's used to traveling the USA and the world.
