Case- ran out of fuel
Facts- I ran out of fuel on I16 east bound mm149. 120 gallon tanks on freightliner. Detroit 60 series motor.
Circumstances- fuel gauge showed a little under 1/4 tank. I traveled 1167 miles when I went empty.
Resolution-Fuel was brought out to me by the closest Ryder shop in savannah ga. It was less than 20 miles away. Showed the service manager at Ryder he said I have a bad fuel sending unit that will need to be replaced on the next PM.
Was this my fault?
Was I wrong? Broken fuel sending unit

yes, you should always be sticking your fuel, and keeping track of it with your mpgs/miles.
i check my tanks everyday
American TruckerRed Hot Mess Thanks this. -
I don't stick my tank but do keep up with my mpgs. I figure it out using 5mpgs and the way I figured I was right at the point I needed fuel but could make it.
So I have 120s on each side and on the tag it says 95% usable capacity so that would put me at 228 gallons usable at 5mpgs would give me 1140. I ran out at right about there. But I usually low ball the mpgs so I don't run out of fuel. I guess I should ask at a shop if I can get a fuel stick. -
my truck can run out of fuel around 1/4 tank mine like to run to one side or the other around 1/4 so i put shutoff valves on to prevent this run one tank when i get to low

Yep, I check my tanks, my engine, tires and wheels.... so far they are all still attached to the truck..

Never heard it called sticking fuel. I have stuck the tanks... Most of the time I use a small LED penlight to look in them. My fuel gauge seems to be working good. I've ran down to just above the E, and still had about 40 gals. For us it pays better to not run with full tanks. We get paid by the ton. So having less then full tanks means more pay-load.. -
or you can go in the woods and get you a free stick....or buy a wooden dowel from Home Depot or Lowes.
What i like to do is:
Buy a 1" wooden dowel. Cut it so its 12" longer then your tank is deep. lets say you have 150 gal tanks. put exactly 50gal in the tank, stick it and mark the stick with a small line with a pen. add 50 more gal, and mark it, and repete until the tank is full (even dip when full). Then let the stick fully dry, get a wood burner, and burn a line all the way around the stick at each mark and burn 50gal,100gal, 150gal above the line. Then you have a nice 100% accurate stick, AND you can use it to make sure your tanks are drawing evenly and not leaving 75Gal in 1 tank and 5gal in the other throwing your gauge off.

if you use a stick you can see exactly how much is in there, looking down in is like looking at a fish in the water then trying to grab it...never gonna happen, liquid bends light and throws off what you see.

Yes. At one point you should have realized " its been a very long time since I got fuel". I start Looking for fuel at 1/2 tank, same goes for DEF.
Red Hot Mess Thanks this.
