I'm starting CDL school in a couple weeks and have some questions about Roehl's western regional flatbed fleet....I have been reading in this forum for months and haven't found my answers. I currently live and will be going to school in Tucson, AZ but am planning on moving my family to Show Low, AZ (about 180 miles NE of Phoenix) after finishing school. I'm going to try to find a local job first with either Shamrock or one of the bottling companies up there, but Roehl is my plan B. For those of you on the western regional, what kind of hometime are you getting? Will being 180 miles away from the closest terminal severely affect my hometime? I know and understand it will probably affect it some, just curious by how much. How are the miles/pay? When I was signing up for school today, the recruiter said she had "heard" Roehl is going to increase starting pay to 44 cpm.....any truth to this? I would like to bring home $850/wk, is this doable starting out?

    TIA

Hhmmm, so let's start with the question you didn't ask. Is Roehl a good company for a new driver? YES.
Next, don't believe the "western regional". You will be driving from Michigan to Georgia and everywhere West of that.com
44 CPM to start? NOT EVEN CLOSE! $850 a week? Possible, but you won't see it consistently until you are driving at least 6-9 months as they "baby" you until they know you can handle it.
Hometime? Well you picked the worst possible place to move for consistent home time. You would be better staying in Tucson. You may get lucky with loads passing by on I-40, but I seriously doubt you would ever get a load through home. Other than that, hometime is what you request, at min probably 11 days out and 3 at home, but if you move to Show Low, I couldn't even guess what your home time would be.

I figured the 44 cpm wasn't right just from what I've read on here. So what kind of weekly checks could I expect during the first few solo months of being with Roehl? From a hometime perspective, I know we would be better off in Tucson, but both my wife and I really want to move to Show Low and we have the financially means to do it right now. The crappy hometime issue may end up just being a temporary thing we have to deal with till something local opens up.

My experience says 500 average for first few months is more realistic. Will you have higher weeks? Of course, but on average that was my experience. After the quarterly raises, if you qualify, kick in you will see your pay check start bumping up. With the new pay plan you should get a raise for the first 6-9 months every quarter. After that, its up to you and your FM. OK, really your FM, but they won't say that.

Does Roehl do orientation training at the Phoenix terminal? What's the starting CPM for flatbed national vs regional?

There is orientation in Phoenix, but there is limited space. Not sure what starting pay is, but I am pretty sure the difference from regional to National is .02 per mile. National gets the higher pay.
