Good day
I drove professionally from 1975 to 1999. I hauled race horses, refrigerated freight , and the last 10 years was a union haz-mat tank job. I ran all 48 and southern Canada during that time. My family asked me to get off the road and find something where I could be home for dinner. So I did a career change, went to school for 5 years and became a software developer. I have been working in an office for the last 10 years. I am home for dinner most nights (still have 4-6 "hell weeks" as year). Make a boat load of money. But yet I still miss driving.
However, before I jump back in, I want to be sure I am not thinking of truck driving like the "old girlfriend". All I can remember is the good times, and not why we are not together anymore.
My kids are gone, my wife will support anything I choose. I am 55 with 10 years left.
So guys what am I forgetting, what has changed for the better/worse in the last 14 years.
cheers
bob

What has changed over the last 14 years? I'll tell ya what has changed over just the last 10:
Regulations
regulations
regulations
the talk of more and stupider regulations
trucker behavior, both on the interstate and within the truckstop
this is just the short list.
If I were in your position, and we're about the same age (52), I'd stick where I am. It's not as fun as it was just a decade ago. It's a bigger PITA then before.
If I could get out tomorrow, I would. But I've got at least eight years left with three kids/stepkids in college and another yet to come.
I wish you the very best in whatever you decide.rocknroll81, allniter, Hanadarko and 1 other person Thank this. -
the regulations have for sure changed, the "brotherhood" we once knew is gone, very few of the drivers care about anyone but them selves the fun is hard to find i'm with a small outfit and its pretty sweet.sure isnt what it used to be,but im not ready to hang it up just yet. Good Luck

What he said... I'm 52 also and in my opinion they have regulated all the fun out of it. I have been trucking 30 years and tanking for 28, it's not a "career" or an adventure any more its a chore, just my $0.02.
rocknroll81, Tonythetruckerdude and 48Packard Thank this. -
There are a few guys on here that have been in the same situation and started again recently and seem to be enjoying themselves. MNdriver comes to mind. Transam Pete as well. I know there are a couple of others. I guess it's something you have to decide personally on how much you miss it and whether you would still enjoy it considering the changes. Might ask those guys for insight.
MNdriver Thanks this. -
Same thing i would suggest! Driving is a completely different animal now compared to 1999 and getting worse every day.

Wait until you don't need the money anymore and then do it as a hobby.
