What do you actually check on a pre-trip inspection?

Your company might be running grease hubs. On oil hubs, there will either be a site glass with little lines showing the level or a rubber plug you can pop off and stick your finger in to check. If your company is running grease hubs, then yes, you will just be able to check for leaks.

The whooshing is normal if it's the first few minutes after you stop. That would just be the air ride doing its thing when first stopping.

On your APU, there will be screws that you can loosen and pop the top cover off if you have a Carrier. For Thermo King, I believe it's just a simple latch system. There will be a normal dipstick that you can pull.

Here's a picture of an oil bath hub with auto inflate. The 3 little windows have an 'Add' and 'Full' line.

I have been a company driver for my entire career. I'm only allowed to make very simple repairs like replacing a defective license tag light, replacing a defective glad hand seal, and things like that. I'm not allowed to make major repairs. So I had no reason to learn how the hub oil seal works. If I saw a wheel end apart, I never examined it or paid much attention to it. A person does not learn by osmosis. A person has to make an effort to learn.

I think if you did a poll of truckers who have been company drivers their entire careers and have nine years of experience like I do, I think a lot of the company drivers would not know to check for hub oil seal leaks on the inside of the wheel. You'd be surprised. The people that read this thread that did not know themselves about this just don't post about it to avoid exposing themselves to ridicule.

The fact that the whooshing is normal makes it difficult for me to differentiate normal whooshing with an air leak. Do you ever have the same problem?

That is the first time I have ever seen anyone write oil bath hub with the word bath in it in my life. Could you take a photograph of that oil bath hub closer to the three little windows so I can see that with better resolution?

The hubs on the outside of the trailer wheels on the trailers at my carrier don't have those three little windows. So my company probably has the grease hubs.

Post a pic of the hubs that are on your trailer and we can tell you what type they are.

I used to attend an HVAC program at a trade school. One of the students that was in my class is deaf. The trade school hired a sign language interpreter to attend the trade school with him and communicate with him everything that the instructor said by sign language. When the deaf student had attended the trade school for a whole year, I told the interpreter that he must be learning a lot about HVAC by being an interpreter for this deaf student in this class. To my surprise, the interpreter told me that the interpreter learned almost nothing about HVAC in the class because he was not trying to learn it. He was only trying to interpret and communicate with the deaf student. That's when I realized that people don't learn by osmosis. You have to pay attention and make an effort to learn in order to actually learn.

That's why there's labels on coffee lids stating "caution hot", just because we're buying a hot cup of coffee does not mean we understand that the coffee is hot.

Did they not teach you to check your brake wear or for broken or cracked shoes at school?

I would recommend you download a CDL drivers manual from just about any state and start reading cover to cover. They sure seem to have missed a lot at your school.

Okay, that's good. Wanting to learn is the first step. One thing though...and I've mentioned this before...don't argue with these guys when they give you advice. Not even a little bit. If you don't like the advice or if it doesn't pertain to what you're doing, just hit the thanks button and move on.
A lot of people have taken their own free time to help you. Listen to what they have to say.
