Years ago, I knew a guy that drove for CF, Freightliner cabover. He said it had 3 gauges. Air pressure, oil pressure and water temp. and a speedograph. Can't remember the motor, but it was a 10 speed, and he said many times, he never did get it into 10th.

semi retired might have been a 903 cummins motor. 903 cubic inches of V-8 trouble. they made three model non turbo about 300 horse, 1 turbo about 350 horse, and my favorite a double turbo about 450 horse. had trouble with front bearing not being strong enough, exhaust gaskets, and about 2800 rpms. you get one of 450 jobs with 370 gears on big rubber and 2800 rpms you could almost fly until that front bearing let loose. if you remember some tractor company made a V-8 painted orange terrible motor same problems. be safe

Called tachograph..by truckers tattletales... They had a needle that scratched a round paper disc..as the clock turned..so did the disc..then you had a needle that scratched the disc with your speed.so it showed the times that you drove or stopped..and the speed..but being truck drivers..if you opened the front cover ..it had pins in holes so the door could be removed..so we found that if you put a penny in the top of the pin.it would raise the door so it would register 5 mph slower than you did..they were a pain in the neck..BUT if you got a ticket for speeding and you weren't..well here's your proof..or your time for the day..then at the end of the day..you would take the paper disc out and fill in what you did when you did it..like at zero mph for a half hour you wrote lunch..or loading Los Angeles,ca or what ever..sort of a pre elog...

I ran for a company for 5 years that had them. We had one for the MPH, and one for the RPM.

Many tired to use rubber bands, but they always got caught, the line would be strait.

And every time you open the door it cuts a notch in the disc, so they can tell ever time you open it up.

Our speed limit was 55 MPH, I learned how to take them apart so that it would show a slower speed. But that's been a long time ago.

A cigarette but would cause it to draw a strait line just as a pin stuck through the glass, and when the boss checked you out, you would be in big trouble.

I still see the paper discs for sale at some services areas in the UK so presumably there are still trucks using them over here.

Tachographs have been mandatory in Europe for over 25 years. Of course they use the newer electronic versions now, which incorporate all of the HOS and GPS data. And anyone can go onto You Tube and see how well these recording devices have stopped absurd preventable accidents there....
