Just hired on with a small company three weeks ago hauling reefer loads. In the three weeks I've been with them I've had three breakdowns with the truck they gave me. The last breakdown was nine days ago and I sat either at the Freightliner dealer or in a hotel room for eight days with no end in site. Castille promised me they would pay me for the down time and that they always do that for their drivers. After finding out yesterday that the mechanics were still trying to diagnose the problem I decided to quit and fly home. I was frustrated that Castille wasn't giving me any other option other than wait for who knows how long. They are now saying they won't pay me for the down time because I quit and that they are going to have to pay for someone to fly to Atlanta to pick up the truck. What would you have done?

So you abandoned a truck? May god have mercy on your career.....
Balakov100, John Dewart, Dave_in_AZ and 1 other person Thank this. -
Waited till I had another job to quit.
I will usually endure until I find something better. I always land on my feet and try to minimize burning bridges.
You burned that bridge good. A man would have held his honor and dealt with it a bit more responsibly.
Hurstclausland Thanks this. -
Indeed.
Assuming this company reports to Hireright that is, abandonment isn't looked upon kindly at all. -
I can't say i blame the guy. But yeah, thanks to DAC. You've got a long climb ahead of you now.
STay away from the megas and you'll be allright, though.
When it comes to DAC, megas aren't worth working for. But that's my $.02 -
So...they were going to pay you to do nothing and you quit?
John Dewart, Dave_in_AZ, lagbrosdetmi and 2 others Thank this. -
Was the breakdown pay spelled out clearly at hire or orientation time?
-
God have mercy on you for quitting.
You stood to make what? 8 days worth of 10 dollars an hour sitting on ###? I sat for 4 days once in two hotels and 5 tractors to get through the original break down. All of it paid at 10.00 an hour from 4 PM day one through 2 pm day five nights included. That was enough money to make me happy that week.
You are not going to get anywhere in this industry if you cannot show endurance and fortitude to wait as long as necessary FOR YOUR TRUCK TO BE FIXED.
It's YOUR TRUCK #### it. You should OWN that truck and take care of it as you will take care of a wife for crying out loud. Don't you understand what it is to be responsible and stay through whatever life throws at you as a Agent of a Company who entrusted you with a 100K tractor trailer with god knows how much freight waiting on you to be fixed? ####### these young people dont have any endurance and quit because they lay around a week. Sheesh.

Ever failed a drug screenlagbrosdetmi Thanks this. -
Probably should not have quit but rather just fly home and leave it as "let me know when I can go back and get it". Then when it's been long enough at home you can ease into them with "I need to work here ..." and leave the company that way. I understand it sucks but you did leave them high and dry ...
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
I don't know how backlogged the Freightliner dealers are, but I can assure you your truck wasn't being diagnosed all 8 days. In fact, if they are as backed up as International, it most likely hit the bay yesterday, 1 full week after writing it up. Let's keep in mind, this is also Atlanta, a major freight area, equating to lots and lots of trucks and many of them are Freightliners. It might not even be in a bay yet. If the issues you are having are EGR related, welcome to the club.
What would I do? Same thing I did a couple of weeks ago. I sit in a company-paid for motel room using as much free wifi as I want and taking as many free showers as I want, all the while, getting paid $10 per hour for 11 hours per day.
As you can see, 6 lines from the bottom of X1's post, quitting like you did is a very bad thing. Best of luck in your next career.White_Knuckle_Newbie and x1Heavy Thank this.
