Check wheel seals, and look for metal fines in hub oil as well. Bad deal. Hate to see this stuff happen.

I think Ontario will fine the truck's owner a large sum of money, plus impound the truck for 30 days.

The article is not very clear. It says "dual tire". Are they refering to the outside dual coming off or the pair because of a hub nut/bearing failure?

Hmmm...interesting, and not sure. Didn't appear to be "super single" issues. @cnsper? didn't you go thru something like this recently?

Yes only it was the lug nuts. They can be tight by hand but still be loose by tire standard.

Dye Guardian and G13Tomcat Thank this.

Being hit by a loose tire is my #1 fear on the road. I know exactly how many incompetent boobs there are out there wrenching and doing tire work these days.

I was getting new tires on my trailer. They showed me that the inside rim was ready to come off on 2 sets. The hole had rusted and the nut or bolt with the flange could almost pass through the hole. These are piloted hubs

    dca and Lepton1 Thank this.

If the reporting is correct and it was a dual wheel, I am inclined to believe it was bearing failure and an axle shearing off, leaving the dual set intact.
