Called mechanic: he said if the wheel seals leaks onto the brake pads and drum I should swap pads and drum due to soaking/fire hazard. True? Or he pulling a fast one?
jamespmack Thanks this. -
It’s leaking because the new seal failed, improperly installed, it’s cheaper to replace shoes than pay shop time to clean. Brake drums can be cleaned.
Did mechanic offer any warranty?jamespmack and Final Drive Thank this. -
He installed the wrong seals, or damaged new seals on install, he should cover the cost of labor and seals. Ive never cleaned drums and brake shoes on a wheel seal leak, never had an issue.jamespmack and Bean Jr. Thank this.

Drums are easy to clean. Just use starting fluid, or break cleanersnowwy, Muddydog79, jamespmack and 1 other person Thank this.

it was my uncle so I get that family warranty haha. Am I missing something about understanding the wheel seal? Why would it leak from inside the wheel area if the seal is towards the outer part of the wheel?jamespmack Thanks this.

Hubcap or axle flange is outter. Wheel seal is inboard. Np cleaning a drum. Shoes need to be replaced.
pushbroom Thanks this. -
Nope you can safely clean the shoes also..

When ever I had that issue I would steam clean the #### out of them and then brake clean and blow dry.
Zero issues doing it this way in well over thirty years.
Also if the hub vents are restricted or blocked the wheel seals can leak.Klleetrucking, supergreatguy, Bean Jr. and 2 others Thank this. -
The old debate, have I done this for dealers, customers and employers? Yes. But if your that cheap, that you can't afford new shoes. Your broke. No oil soaked brake lining should never be reused. While I still do side work, if you request this you need to find a new shop. I'm not doing it.
