My hubby has hit the six month mark with his current company. His long term plan was/is to stay put for no less than a year and perhaps longer before changing. But we are going to starve to death.
I realize miles are down everywhere right now and I've seen some post that this is the worst they have ever seen it. But I've also seen post where people are still getting plenty.
We really wanted him to get his year in with one company before even considering a change. But I don't know.At what point do you say the harm done by changing jobs early out weighs starving to death on 1200 miles a week? Any thoughts are appreciated.
When is it time to start looking elsewhere?

Before making a move things to consider not mentioned above. Did he go thru training with that company is he required to fulfil a contract of service if not completed will he be required to pay for the training. Does he only have 6 months of experiance or has he changed jobs 3 or more times in the last 2 years. if yes to any of the above it will be Extremley difficult for him to find employement elsewhere. Heres a thought maybe you could get a job and help with the income also until he is able to move on to bigger and better things.

Bill lasted 6 months with TransAm before leaving due to the same problem. The next company was even worse. He averaged 230.00 a week. Now Crete and Shaffer told him he has an unstable work history, even tho both companies he worked for previously put him in for rehire and TransAm wanted him there 12/29 for orientation again. As bad as it was, we are even more broke now and NOT going back to TA. Local jobs are really hard to come by but worth looking into, check online at your local state job service. Might sound smelly but the route drivers emptying dumpsters get 1/2 way decent hourly pay. Look at Waste management-no jobs in our area but they have openings in other states. Just trying to help.

leannamarie and Hometime Thank this. -
Listen to LandShark, he knows what he is talking about. And who is making "plenty" out here? Have you seen their pay stubs? Truckers are the biggest liars out here this side of the planet Mars. Take what you hear with a grain of salt, because that is all it is worth. If you and he want to stay in this racket suck it up. I am going on 20 years out here, and have never seen it like this. This time last year, I was doing at least five grand a week. Right now, I cannot even get out of my driveway. Last Jan. $15,000 in ten days on a round tripper. I ain't made a dime this week as a lease op, and am already getting ready to throw the towel in on Schneider and go back with my flat to another outfit.
I used to have my own authority, leased to Jones Motor, than Schneider. I have never switched jobs like this in my lifetime, not even high school. And my wife is ready to pull her hair out! Along with mine! It ain't good out here right now, and my gut tells me it will be a few more years before things get back to some semblence of normallcy.
Just my .02

Fortunately I have a great job.
I am what is keeping us a float and that is weighing heavy on his pride. It doesn't bother me as much as it does him but I'm sure guys understand.
To answer your questions he is NOT in a contract situation with his current company. We paid for his school and he will not be obligated to pay it back to any particular company. Prior to going to this OTR job he has had a grand total of 3 jobs in the last 26 years. After being laid off from a long time job he turned to getting a CDL when nothing else turned up after six long months.
So between the lay off, looking for work, paying for school, a child in college etc. we have exhausted the "extra" money. But if him staying put is the better thing to do that is what he will have to do and we will figure it out. That's why I ask here from those who have done this a whole lot longer than six months.

Take a chill pill Billsgirl. you could use one. No where in her post did she mention she was working. all that was said is she didnt know what to do...and quoting my own post "here is a thought" that means its SOMETHING TO THINK about and if things are that bad and she does have a job HERE IS ANOTHER thought maybe get a part time second job...hell its rough on all of us right now and we are all doing what we can to survive.... On my days at home I even deliver pizzas for the extra money.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 29, 2008

You have been doing this for what 17 years? I will take your .02 anytime. That is why I am asking. This way I can tell him I have come here and talked to experienced drivers and even though he is not feeling good about it the advice given is to stick it out. He would rather hear that from you than his wife. LOL -
No Billsgirl, an ignorant comment from someone that does not know the industry that they (you) are NOW involved with.
It ain't good out here. Sure, vent that anger, but it ain't going to put one dime into the bank account.
Lighten up. You ain't the only one having problems out here. It is solution time, so what can you or your husband do, or me for that matter... What can we do differently?

That changes the whole situation if he can live with the pride issue of you making more than him...But he should be able to go just about anywhere he wants... the only problem being is finding out who is acctually running right now.Hometime Thanks this.
