That was what I could get before it cut off the links. BTW, took our O/O to pick up his truck from Freightliner today, they had 17 trucks waiting for clutch jobs, all manuals.

Looking at new Nissan Frontier pickups, the automatic is standard, manual is an option. The automatic has a 6,300 lb towing capacity, manual is only a 5,800 lb capacity. Dealers have autos 4 to 1 over manuals available for sale, manuals are special order only. In fact, the one dealer is selling manuals for $2,500 less than automatics.

I was a bridgebuilder/piledriver in my old life. Worked with an old timer who carried a bit and brace as well as a handsaw and many other handtools in his box. He was telling us how the crews hated Skilsaws when they first came on the scene. Figure they were more efficient along with plywood that replace 2x6 for form work- fewer guys could do more work.

Welders lamented the new fangled wire feeders replacing stick. With stick you were expected to lay 1 foot of 1/4 cubic inch weld per hour. Typically burn you 14" stick down to the last inch, lift your hood and grab a new 14" rod- a little mini break right there.

With wire feed, you put your hood down and pull the trigger. Pretty much keep going til you can't reach anymore. We were splicing some 3/4 " thick- 42" diameter pipe pilings, bolt up to magnetic half tracks and mount the weld feed up on the track. All the welder has to do is set it at the beginning and walk around following the wire feed 11 some feet around the pipe ever so slowly. Took about 10 passes and 4 hours to finish. To weld that by hand would take at least twice as long for 2 welders, one working each half of the pipe.

How do you put your trust in a computer chip to select the proper gear going down a 6% grade? I like being in absolute control of that decision with a manual.

    1. basic clutch job (on a 9 yr old truck driven by a driver with 2 yrs experience).
    3. A 6 speed in a 20 yr old FLD70 behind a 8.3L? You cannot be serious. Not a trans problem anyway (wrong oil).
    4. Not a trans problem (student asking question about grinding).
    5. Not a trans problem (power divider problem).

Most of those you posted weren't trans problems and (unlike autos) a manual rarely leaves the driver stranded in need of a tow resulting in potential service failure/missed delivery appointment. That would REALLY tick me off.

And a dealership with 17 manuals needing clutches....that's hearsay at best and more likely a complete lie by a salesman that wants to sell automatics or an internet poster grasping at straws.

So you found one trans problem. I give you 7 auto problems below (most requiring tow trucks) and I await your next volley.

For my money, I will continue to perfect my craft and shift my manual with one or two fingers so smoothly I am left to ask myself, "Why would any OTR driver need (or even want) an auto so that they may deprive themselves of the feeling that comes from executing a perfect, silent shift."

I suppose next you folks will be advocating for Nerf (deflated) footballs in the NFL and aluminum bats in the majors. By all means, use whatever you need to use but an auto is an uneccessary complication and expense to me.

Finally, I promised you some threads on auto failures so here, read these stories of woe from poor ######## that drank the kool-aid. There are hundreds more.

Yeah, I'd NEVER touch NYC without an automatic. (Car included). Ofc, where I live, every local job wants to send me there.
