I have a ISX 870 in a 2007 Peterbilt with a Eaton Automatic behind it.

The truck will start fine and once I put it in gear and start to drive it will not come out of 2nd gear. I can shift to first, reverse, reverse 2, and second, but using manual or automatic it will not shift into any other gear.

I have had a simular problem once before and took out the sensors on the top of the motor and replaced them. At that time the problem was not the sensor, but the fact that some metal particles had built up on the sensor (its magnetic on the end) and it was not reading properly. With this problem though I was able to shift in manual but not auto. I have cleaned these sensors now just to make sure they are ok, but no change in the problem!!

I have checked both the transmission and engine and its not showing any codes.

Also as I drive it trying to get it to shift the RPMs are very erratic. When I first put it in gear it will start to build RPMS then abruptly go back to idle several times and eventually slowly start to build RPMs to just under 1500. As I continue to drive the RPMs will shoot up to around 2000 then return to 1500, the back to 2000 randomly.

Looking back at what could cause this frustrating problem I did do some maintenance on the truck before this happened. I have looked for any broken or plugins I may have forgotten but cannot find any. I had removed the intake tube (the one the air compressor gets its air from) for soot inspection, removed the air intake from the turbo to inspect the turbo for bearing play, and also removed the MAP sensor for inspection. It would be logical one of these actions caused this problem, but so far I am unable to figure it out!

Anyone have an experience with this? Can anyone help? Anyone want to buy a nice Peterbilt that runs really well under 10 MPH??

Sounds like a problem with one of the shaft speed sensors that are on the top of the transmission.
Chances are there will be a code for it, to flash active transmission codes starting with the key on cycle the key off then on 2 time and the service light by the trans shifter will flash 2 digit codes that are active, to get inactive codes it's the same as above only cycle the key off and on 4 times.

Maybe a wiring harness issue to the ecm? A short somewhere or a wire about to break? Sounds electrical to me

The tac. and speedo sen. both will play with this trans. if speedo or tac . wave around on dial it will not shift?

    Stand back 3 feet.
Shout "The power of Christ compels you!" - twice.

If the ISX starts spinning backwards and pukes green vomit on you - you're in trouble son.

These autos are critical to have a clean power source...
The harness to the X-Y shifter is known to fail if not wire tied properly.
The TCU gets upset if the power supply is not >12vdc, Check all connections at battery, TCU and fuses for corrosion..
Lastly if the control signals from the Tachometer (ECU) are corrupt the TCU will inhibit shifts (fail safe).

Thanks all for the great suggestions and advice. I finally got it fixed today!! I put in an output shaft sensor, Stood back 3 feet and shouted "The power of Christ compels you!" - twice and it worked!!

Seriously though I drove this several times after checking connections and jiggling wires. A mechanic friend of mine tapped into the computer and found no codes, but suggested we drive down the road a ways instead of driving circles around in my yard trying to get it to shift. Sure enough once we were far enough away from home to make walking something to think twice about a code showed up on the tranny.....code 58....output shaft sensor. Of course when I went to replace it it broke off. What a nightmare to get out!! Does anyone have a trick to replacing these?

I find it strange that this would not throw a code but yet not let it shift. Looking at the sensor inside the jacket it was rusty so evidently it had cracked some time ago.

Thanks again everyone for your help!!

I'm still looking for a great way to get those sensors out. 99% of the time they seem to break off, the best way I've found thus far is using a easy out on a battery impact and spinning/pulling that part of the sensor in the top cover out.

These sensors are "Hall Effect Zero Speed Sensors" which react to an energy field created by a slotted disk (magnetic).

When spinning slowly the sensor reacts to the well spaced square wave... as the rotation increases the wave becomes spiked (narrow) and the ECU and TCU get confused. Some times even a light coating of metal filing will produce the same issue..(disrupts the signal)

In this situation (partial failure) the TCU may not set any code...

Live data scan (what the computers see)and/or testing with a LABSCOPE would be the only methods of detection..

    Glad you have it sorted...
